O2 sensor causing my car to smell like exhaust?

Alright so a month ago my check engine light came on. I got a diagnostic read on it a week ago and the guy said it was the O2 sensor. He cleared the code and said that it wasen't a big deal at the moment but if it came on again to get it fixed. It has not come on yet but now whenever i shut off my car and get out, it smells of exhaust. Is the smell cause of the O2 sensor? If it helps at all I have a 2000 Hyundai accent
