Idaho Senator Michael Crapo was arrested early Sunday morning for Driving Under the Influence in a Washington, D.C. suburb, police report.
The three-term Republican was pulled over for running a red light in Alexandria, Virginia. A sobriety test found Senator Crapo (pronounced KRAY’-po) to be driving with a blood alcohol level of .11-percent, well above the legal limit of .08-percent.
He was arrested 12:45AM at released from prison at 5:00AM, after posting an unsecured bond of US$1,000.
“There was no refusal (to take blood alcohol tests), no accident, no injuries,” Police spokeswoman Jody Donaldson told the Associated Press. “Just a traffic stop that resulted in a DUI.”
Senator Crapo was alone at the time of his arrest, reports Talking Points Memo.

A staunch social and fiscal conservative, Senator Crapo was set to take over the top Republican spot next year on the Senate Banking Committee. He also serves on the Senate’s budget and finance panels.
Senator Crapo was a member of the self-named “Gang of Six,” a bi-partisan group of senators that worked in 2011 to create a deficit-reduction deal that sought to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff.” The plan was never adopted by Congress.
Senator Crapo, who is a devout Mormon, issued an apology for his behavior later on Sunday night.
“I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance,” Crapo said. “I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated.”
Senator Crapo is set to appear in court on January 4.
