The New York Anime Festival (NYAF) is of course this weekend. This is the third year the con has run, not to mention the last time it will be run separately, since NYAF and NYCC will be running on the same weekend next year. I'll only be able to attend on Saturday, unfortunately, but at least it's the most eventful day of the con. I look forward to the Soul Eater Dub Premiere panel the most, personally. So, who else plans on attending?
 
I'll be there for the News definitely on Saturday and probably Sunday, although looking over the schedule and the stuff I need to take care of in Real Life, a Sunday visit is beginning to look a little less likely. But we'll see.

If you see me (I look like this, although I think the Totoro tee is in the dirty laundry pile at the moment), flag me down and say "hi" if you're so inclined. You might even get your photo in our con coverage as a result.
 
Some pieces of information from the Funimation panel that took place at the NYAF:

-Most of the original English cast for Fullmetal Alchemist will reprise their roles for the Brotherhood dub. As for casting changes, the following were made:

*Alphonse Elric: Maxey Whitehead
*Scar: J. Michael Tatum
*Issac Mcdougal: Bryan Massey

As for Aaron Dismuke (the original voice of Alphonse), he will be featured in another role later in the series:

-X TV and OAV has been licensed rescued.

-Funimation has picked up the Initial D license. The license consists of the the three TV seasons (First, Second, and Fourth Stage), the Third Stage movie, and the Extra Stage OAV. The show will be receiving a new English dub, with the original Japanese music being uncut.

Nice news. Initial D was another one of the shows on that online interest survey from a ways ago, so there you go. Good news about X TV, although I have the Remixed DVD's from Geneon so I will probably not double dip on it.
 
I never touched Tokyopop's dub, even after I discovered m.o.v.e (who did the various theme songs for Initial D), so I cannot discuss the previous releases' treatment of the music. But, the fact that I can watch the English dub with the Eurobeat music and the m.o.v.e themes makes me a happy boy. I also wish that they could throw in the full-length music videos in the releases, since from what I gather, the ending sequences are nothing but abridged versions of the music videos. Also, the Initial D animators contributed a music video for the group which co-starred Takumi.
 
Well, with Scar, I kind of knew they would have to replace him since Clarke's in California now, though I do question how the new VA for Al will fare.
 
Clarke also moved to LA, so maybe it was a little more difficult for him. Then again, so do Laura Bailey and Travis Willingham, but they've been still doing a ton of work for FUNi.
 
Yeah, he's doing live action in LA, which is probably why he either a) hasn't the time to fly over or b) won't work for non-union wages.

Just check his Twitter, he's always talking 'bout waiting for a check.
 
Ah, FUNimation news...

They kept their word about revealing the Brotherhood dub cast in Septeraber, and I've been waiting to hear what changes would be made.

The news of the new dub voice for Alphonse was somewhat expected, and it was just a question of who the replacement would be. I figured it would be a FUNimation voice actress who is new enough to have not had a different role in the first series. I don't recognize any of her roles, but hopefully she does Al justice. It will certainly be different from hearing him in the first series, but I've been watching Brotherhood in Japanese anyway, and both Elric brothers are voiced by women in that. It will be interesting to see what the other role he will get later in the series is. Oh well, puberty happens, and his voice is definitely too deep to voice Al like he did in the first series.

I expected Scar to be replaced by J. Michael Tatum, since Dameon Clarke moved to LA to work for only union projects a while ago, and hasn't been back to FUNimation since, not even to reprise Scar in the Premium OVA Collection, in which Scar was first replaced by Tatum. He makes a good replacement.

I only know Bryan Massey as Dragon, but it seems like a good match. It's not like Isaac is a major character after the first episode, anyway.

Now we wait for news of the rest of the cast for the new characters, and the estimated month for the first release for the series.

I don't care about any of the anime licensed/rescued, but it all sounRAB like good news for people who do.
 
I can actually take a look at Initial D now, since I avoided the Tokyopop hack dub like the hack it was. I hope they can get it on TV, but either way I'm excited.
 
Funny how the English dub of FMA:B keeps most of the voice actors but the original Japanese switched a lot of them. Just goes to show it's dub popularity or something.

I guess I have a reason to actually watch Initial D now.

Additionally, Funimation claims that their release will have a "new" dub and will feature the original music. In any case, "new" can mean anything. It might be a "retranslation", or it could just be the Tokyopop script with a few "changes/fixes" here and there. Either way, I'm hoping it will be "Takumi" this time; "Tak" was the result of a compromise between TP and various "industry" people when TP was trying to get the show on TV. Speaking of, if Funimation does decide to try to bring the show to TV (which they may or may not do), I hope they're more willing to keep all the original Japanese elements that TP was told would have to be removed (e.g., the kanji from the logo and car, "pizza" instead of "tofu", etc).

Sorry for the half-rant, but while I said I would give FUNi a chance after the whole Dragon Ball Season 1 thing ("We still don't have the rights..."), I'm still a little "shaken" for lack of a better word.

Anyway, I may buy this, or I might not. On the one hand, while the anime is shonen (even in the original Japanese version), the original manga is seinen, and I don't follow seinen material (I'm a more family-friendly kind of person), and I prefer to focus on the original intent of the author/creator. On the other hand, the change to shonen for the anime might have been for the better, since certain "elements" from the manga were not inlcuded in the anime.

So, any thoughts?
 
Some manga news from the Vertical panel. The company have licensed the following titles in manga form:

-Peepo Choo
-Twin Spica
-Needle
-Chi's Sweet Home

One thing to note: Chi's Sweet Home is going to be "flipped" (possibly due to the Vertical targetting this title to kiRAB).
 
I wouldn't doubt it.

I'm liking the additions to the FMA cast however. I wonder who Dismuke will play...

Intial D totally redubbed uncut with the original music? I
