Keeping smart devices charged becomes increasingly difficult as we acquire more of them, and as they become more powerful. We've seen a slew of products hit the market with the only goal of keeping devices charged, such as VOTO, SOSCharger, and Tarot. A new product called the nuplug has a similar goal, but instead of trying to keep them charged on the go, it's meant to make charging at home a more comfortable experience.
At its core, the nuplug is a surge protector and extension cord with two traditional 120V AC outlets and two 2.1 AMP USB ports. The outlets face the opposite direction, which makes it easier to charge devices with larger power bricks. It comes with a 10-foot (3-meter)-long cord, so it can reach a good distance. The plug is almost flat, so it can tuck behind furniture comfortably.
What makes the nuplug interesting is that it can easily attach to furniture, which makes it quite a bit more versatile than most surge protectors. The design is such that it can be attached to a bed, couch, workbench, and plenty of other places.
The creators offer some interesting uses for the device, such as for charging a wireless gaming controller without being near the console, in lofts and college dorms, for medical equipment that needs to be close to a bed, and so on.
Another small design feature that is actually very smart comes from the cord and the part that clamps to the furniture. The cord can be wrapped through that channel, which should go a long way towards making the device easier to bring on a trip.
Michael Carpanzano, the creator of the nuplug, is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter. The project has over 900 backers who have put forth over US$30,000 in funding at this point. However, the project is still ways off from its lofty $75,000 goal. The project still has plenty of time left to reach its target, as there are 23 days left as of this writing.
Buyers interested in owning their own nuplug can do so for a minimum pledge of $29. Backers can choose between one of the two colors – matte white, and matte black.
