should the government permit any new ones to be built in the US?
why do you say yes?

Yes. Although solar and wind are better all the way around, we have nuclear technology now and that helps us use less foreign oil. Nuclear is clean, has very low impact on the environment, uses little land for the amount of energy produced and for the most part the nuclear waste breaks down much faster than most people think.
I live within 30 miles of both an oil fired/natural gas electrical plant and a nuclear plant. I know people who live nearby the oil plant and they have had cars damaged by the soot coming from the plant. The oil plant was bought by Mirant in 2000 and they have admittedly put in new technology to reduce emissions and converted so they can use natural gas also. But the fact remains they have emissions a nuclear plant does not have.
Personally I would like to see more natural gas used, especially in the transportation industry, but it can also be used to produce electricity. I would also like to see some of the bail out money for the auto makers used in putting hydrogen and natural gas cars into production. They exist, but have never been cost effective, it is time to make them cost effective.

Absolutely. It is the least polluting, the least expensive, and the chickens grown on farms near nuclear power plants have 3 drumsticks.

That last is a funny.
