Latest secret intelligence documents leaked by Edward Snowden suggest National Security Agency (NSA) is trying to crack the online anonymity provided by Tor, which is an Internet tool funded by United States, to keep the activities of Net private. The report was drawn from the cache and was published by the Guardian newspaper of United Kingdom.
So far NSA has not been able to crack the Tor outright, but it is able to de-anonymize certain part of it, though small fraction only, said Guardian citing internal NSA document.
In September the interest of NSA to circumvent privacy-ensuring encryption of all kinds was also published in a news report. According to the New York Times, NSA has sidestepped common Net encryption methods in different ways such as collaborating with tech companies, hacking into the servers of private companies for getting the encryption keys, and also covertly introducing the weaknesses into encryption standards. All were earlier revealed by Snowden in its series of leaks.

Tor, or The Onion Router, is funded by US State Department and Department of Defense together. It was first developed by US Naval Research Laboratory.
In simple terms, the Tor facilitates anonymous surfing over the Internet, posting content on forums, doing instant messaging apart from other communication activities on the Internet. It is done by wrapping the signals in layers of encryption before heading through a network of routers on an unpredictable path. No one router gets access to all the details as it peels off only one skin of the encryption while carrying the signal. This is the reason the signal is not being traced.
