I've been trying really hard to find a book with emotional depth, something that is supposed to be really sad, moving and heartbreaking. Oh, I'm not saying the ending has to be sad. I like both sad and happy endings. I just want beautifully-drawn characters that seem almost real, going through real things. I do prefer romantic tearjerkers.
I've pretty much read everything by Cecelia Ahern, Dorothy Koomson (Goodnight, Beautiful was perfect) and Nicholas Sparks (Dear John was pretty good). I also read a book called Souvenir by Therese Fowler which was along those lines. I loved it the first time but though it was too cliche the second time I read it about two years later. Moving away from more chick-lit genres, I liked The Time Traveller's Wife, Atonement and The Lovely Bones. My Sister's Keeper was alright. Christian recommendations would also be great. I've read a fair few of Karen Kingsbury's novels (including the Redemption series) and Francine River's Redeeming Love.
I've heard great reviews about Mary Balogh's Secret Pearl but I feel it's a bit raunchy for me... I'd prefer something more clean. People have suggested Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre, which I will read, at some point. Someone also suggested Jane Austen. I've read four of her novels and I wouldn't exactly call them 'tearjerkers'. Maggie O'Farrell, I've also heard about but the prose in 'After You'd Gone' seems a bit too disjointed.
Does anyone have any good recommendations? I've been browsing Waterstones for hours lately but I have come away, disappointed, without having bought anything.
