Norse Pagans, Norse Shamans, Asatruar, how did you connect to the runes?

I have been working with the runes for about half a year now, and have just started this week meditating on them. I wish to meditate on each rune, letting the energy of the runes flow into me and express their properties to me. Is this an effective way to connect with them?

How do you personally connect to the runes?
