None of my Steam games will run!?

I've just built my friend a new pc from some older parts he had as his old one broke and he can't fork out for a new one yet.
It's a P4 processor with 1GB DDR RAM, and the graphics card I have no idea what the model number is but it's an Nvidia, and it runs on Windows 7 Home Premium. Anyway...

I installed Steam on it however none of the games work.
I've tried Counter-Strike: Source, Half-Life 2 and Garry's Mod however when I load them, I can see in Task Manager hl2.exe loads but then it just closes itself straight away.

I've tried setting launch options to "-nosound -windowed", I've also tried "-safe", but they do the same thing.

I've tried reinstalling all the games, the only thing I've not tried yet is reinstalling Steam but I fail to see why that would help.

Originally I thought it was a memory (RAM) problem, but other people have had this issue too when upgrading to Windows 7.

The only other thing I could think of is that it'd be the graphics, however I can't install the graphics driver (Windows obviously installed the graphics card) from the official website as I don't know the model of it.

Thanks.
