NON-PARTISAN explanation of the federal reserve debate?

Hello,

I am having trouble finding anyone talking about the federal reserve that doesn't have a strong whiff of libertarianism to them. I would like some plain-language clarification of what it is, and why people are arguing about it.

Please include any reasons why people would have to support the federal reserve. I can ONLY find arguments against it through googling, and stuff on obviously libertarian/Ron Paul type websites.

I just want to know, without a libertarian bias, what the debate is all about. I am pro-government typically (health care, schools, roads, etc. are all grand to me and don't try to convince me otherwise), but so far it seems like it might not really be necessary for the federal reserve to exist. But, like I said, all I can find are super biased resources.

What would be the practical negative impact of the fed disappearing? Would anyone be hurt? There HAS to be some sort of consequence that no one's acknowledging. I mean, of course it's okay that there is, everything has some sort of drawback, but I'd like to know what exactly we're debating, here.
