Hello

I have a strong allergy to dust and I have been under treatment with cyterizine (zyrtec) for over 3 years, using a low dosage (5mg per day).

I have been experiencing tinnitus in my ears for 6 months now and I have just found out that zyrtec may be ototoxic and then it may be the cause (or at least the con-cause) of the sounRAB I hear.

The question is: does anyone know an antistamic which is not known to be ototoxic?

Thanks

When I saw your post, i did several searches. After reading several articles on ototoxic drug issues, it appears that the side effect you are noting is usually listed in the drug information. All the articles I read said to check the drug info sheet and the PDR (book docs here in the US use to get info on drugs). Doing that, i find no mention under Zyrtec of this side effect. However, many other drugs do list it. Where did you find this information on Zyrtec? Is it something published only in your country? I've been on Zyrtec off and on for about 10 years and have had no such issues so far.

If you google for "zyrtec ototoxic" you will find many results.
After lots of searchs, they generally say that tinnitus (and other ototoxic effects) will occour in about 2% of zyrtec users.

So I am stil looking for some other non-ototoxic antistamic...

I have been on Zyrtec for 4 years now and I'd like at least to try some other drugs to check if I can get better about my ear problem (which is tinnitus).

If you find something please let me know and I will do the same :)

Thanks

there are some hearing loss websites out there that have compiled lists of ototoxic drugs. You might try doing some searches for those.

I would try other antihistamines (starting with loratadine 10mg per day) until you find one that suits you.

There are many out there, from different chemiocal groups, so you should easily find one that suits.
