non disclosure agreement: can call center fire you for emailing client company CEO and then forbid contact?

Was fired from a call center for having some personal emails between me and the CEO of the client company. They said it was in the non discolsure contract no direct contact. Me and the CEO became friends during a trip to NYC for meetings and none of the emails invloved work secrets or saying bad things. Now they say if I even contact the CEO to tell them I was fired or even for a reference that they will prosecute me. Can they do that? I don't mind if they try to sue since no money and wasting their time. Just want to make sure no criminal prosecution possible. Whats also weird about it is a few months back they checked all my emails and knew I was talking with the CEO and they said they found no problems and didn't say to stop emailing her. Also my job involved lots of work contact with the CEO too. They fired me for responding to a thank you email for a box of cookies I send her for Christmas.
