Nokia should make a better series60 gimmick than a Music Edition

I think the first Nokia gimmick with regard to offshoot (what I mean by offshoot is, same model but has an officially stated variation) is the "i" offshoot, e.g., 6230 to 6230i.

I don't know if it created an impact on the Nokia users but personally, it's just a name change.

Later variants include the black edition (6680 and 6600).

Now we have the Music Edition (N70, N73, and N91).

All are pretty lame variants in my opinion. Pretty bad gimmicks, though I like this attempt of Nokia to ensure the added shelf of their older models instead of easily phasing them out when the new model comes, like what SE did to P900 and P910 when P990 came out.

The only profound modification that I noticed was the casing modification that Nokia did to 6630. I really hate the aesthetics of that phone but after I've seen its newest incarnation, I initially thought that I'm seeing an N-series. I couldn't find a pic of it yet on the web but it's definitely N70 inspired where apparently there's a metal lining around the screen perimeter that extends all the way down to the numeric keypad.

I then realized that if it's the casing that would be Nokia's source of gimmick, they can might as well get more ambitious and execute something like:

Nokia N73 gold metal casing Dolce & Gabbana edition.

I don't understand why they have to put prestige in series 40 (e.g., Sirocco and L'amour) and leave the series60 (e.g., the N-series) with a make-or-break aesthetics.

I agree with you for the most part but the 6230i was certainly a worthy upgrade with a 1.3 meg camera up from the standard 640x480 and it had a larger screen 208x208 (same as 8800)...also added a selection button in the middle of the directional pad. The only odd thing was not releasing it with 850. I think the EU only 8910 series added the "i" which was a color screen. I agree however that the current upgrades like the music edition and the N80ie are a crock somewhat....the 9300i also added wi-fi, so nokia is sorta on again off again with their flakiness in regards to upgrades.

I think they are banking on the luxury line being for people that want a really sharp unique looking phone without the sluggish UI of a S60. I know that when I fire up my S60's i'm a good 2 minutes away from making a phone call where when I turn on my 8801 I'm 10 seconds away.....now I approach it differently as most on hofo probably do. I appreciate the hell out of my S60s but love having the 8801 for a night out with my wife and friends for simple fast phone operations. Nothing worse than stammering around a symbian while extremely intoxicated!!

Just timed my N73 on startup time. 45 seconds. Will have to time it without the 2gig memory card.

Anyway, startup time should only affect you at the start of the day, the rest of the time the device is left on .... ?

As for these music editions being "gimmicks", its just a typical marketing ploy. Is having a PSP bundled with a couple of games a gimmick? Sure, but its useful. Shipping the phone with more memory, or better headphones is quick'n'easy to package and sell. The base products are good, and this just gives them a little extra kick with very little expenditure from the manufacturers.

with my 8890 seriously 10 seconds is probably a longer estimate and with my 8801 10 seconds is probably accurate. S40's are like little mazda miatas...really quick and peppy out of the gate but not much more to it....s60's are like a big ole SUV IMO. Big and lurpy without a lot of comfort and features but a tad slow.

The slow startup does not apply to N93, mine starts in 15 secs...the new firmware it seems will shave 2 secs from that making it around 13.

and the UI is not s40, but really fast.

lol...

when did this thread got form gimmicks/features/casing to start up times??

Agreed with AG here. A touch more prestige should be injected. I hate to mention it, but Moto sorta gets it - from what I can tell. Nokia started to make some inroads with the 8801 and all variants, as well as with the L'amour collection, but so much more is possible.

They did make something cool in the Nokia x WESC (3250), but that was in such limited run... 500 units worldwide.

They need to do something splashy with the 8801. Too much potential.

Imagine a Nokia 8801 x Jacob the Jeweler??

H!
