I think the first Nokia gimmick with regard to offshoot (what I mean by offshoot is, same model but has an officially stated variation) is the "i" offshoot, e.g., 6230 to 6230i.
I don't know if it created an impact on the Nokia users but personally, it's just a name change.
Later variants include the black edition (6680 and 6600).
Now we have the Music Edition (N70, N73, and N91).
All are pretty lame variants in my opinion. Pretty bad gimmicks, though I like this attempt of Nokia to ensure the added shelf of their older models instead of easily phasing them out when the new model comes, like what SE did to P900 and P910 when P990 came out.
The only profound modification that I noticed was the casing modification that Nokia did to 6630. I really hate the aesthetics of that phone but after I've seen its newest incarnation, I initially thought that I'm seeing an N-series. I couldn't find a pic of it yet on the web but it's definitely N70 inspired where apparently there's a metal lining around the screen perimeter that extends all the way down to the numeric keypad.
I then realized that if it's the casing that would be Nokia's source of gimmick, they can might as well get more ambitious and execute something like:
Nokia N73 gold metal casing Dolce & Gabbana edition.
I don't understand why they have to put prestige in series 40 (e.g., Sirocco and L'amour) and leave the series60 (e.g., the N-series) with a make-or-break aesthetics.
