Nokia N95 True Cost to Own

On the note of data plans etc., was wondering if *only* getting a data plan and unlimited Skype work? (Dunno if Skype works on s60..) Been thinking bout this a lot as it's very appealing.

VoIP in any form over EDGE is terrible, TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!

Plus, you'd drain your battery so freaking fast you'd need spares throughout the day.

3G simply doesnt work in North America.

Sucks to hear that; thought the state of tech over here has gone up a teeny lil bit, but apparently I've been very misinformed. Sad to know that so many handsets can't live up to its potential here. Let us take a moment to mourn.. T-T

what i mean is, when i got one that is "off-the-shelf" and not a proto.... i hate proto... unless it is free that is....

I know what you meant...I guess in Dubai you'll have the option to walk into a retail store and buy one trully off of the shelf. Unless you go to an importer in NYC we will probably never have that luxury....well....maybe the Nokia store.

I don't think this is going to be an issue, the N95 supports.

? WCDMA 2100 (HSDPA) with simultaneous voice and packet data (PS max speed UL/DL= 384/3.6MB, CS max speed 64kbps)

? Dual Transfer Mode (DTM) support for simultaneous voice and packet data connection in GSM/EDGE networks. Simple class A, multi slot class 11, max speed DL/UL: 177.6/118.4 kbits/s

Check this out how much this phone is!!!!!!!!!!!

I am going crazy for 1 but I'm not paying that much OMG) I'll wait

Guessing this "Cingular BroadbandConnect network" is the one that the N95 isn't compatible with? --> http://www.cingular.com/media/downloads/CING_U_WAsea_v3.pdf

The WCDMA 2100 is useless in the States because no carrier uses it. T-Mobile may use it for their 3G service in the future, but it'll be coupled with 1700 MHz.

DTM is carrier dependent. I believe the N73 and the N93 support this as well, but it doesn't work with any carrier I've seen so far. I imagine DTM would work much better if we had 3G, so an EDGE connection could handle the data and the 3G would handle the phone call. Something like that.

You are almost 100% correct!! However DTM is supported by Westlink here in Kansas. With my N80 and other devices I have been able to take advantage of DTM when using as a modem I can still take and make calls. However, I need to make it clear that somtimes I have issues at handover. T-mobile and Rodgers also supports DTM in select areas. However, they do not set up their phones to take advantage of this service.

Oh, nifty. I did not know that. Thank you.

Edit: When/if I repeat this argument, I'll say 99% of US carriers don't support DTM instead of none.
