Nokia N8 - Still Randomly Reboots!!!

I lived with my E71 sporadically rebooting on AT&T and thought that problem was resolved on the newer Nokias. Well, my new N8 has been rebooting at least a few times a day, which I find really annoying. With my E71 it seemed to stop rebooting if I manually switched to Edge but this does not fix the problem on the N8. I cannot believe this still happens. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix please pass along.

This is surprising to me. I had N8 over a week & it is rock solid, it rebooted only once when I swapped(hot) the sim. I agree with you about E71, that phone used to reboot like there is no tomorrow.

You should try an T-Mob sim and see if it still reboots. If it does then it's your phone not the network. I really hope it's not the network because I need to have 3G. My N95-4 is so handicapped now that I'm stuck back on EDGE.

Since it still reboots in EDGE then it's not a network issue like it was on the E71. Later firmwares have fixed the E71 and it's not rock solid.

What apps have you installed on the N8? Does it reboot randomly or is there a pattern to it? Perhaps a factory reset would clear out whatever issue you're having.

Thanks for the replies. It had been happening about three times per day and appeared to be random. I do not have many apps installed (joikuspot, opera mini/mobile, maps 3.06 about it). I also (from day 1) set all widgets to offline (and even removed weather, nat geo, movies, top apps). On my E71 I always used the Now Playing screen saver and that is the one I had been using on the N8. Yesterday morning I changed it to the big clock and dare I say it but it has not rebooted since. I know it is too early to tell but I am hopeful (and doubtful that it could be something as simple as that). Also, the only way I am noticing the reboots (other than when I happen to be looking at the phone to see the white startup screen with the blue Nokia) is to leave something running, like the settings menu or another menu. I periodically check the running apps and if these are not running then it has rebooted. On my E71 I had jbak taskman set to run at startup and after it would start I would exit jbak so if jbak was running I knew it rebooted. Anyway if anyone knows a different way to find reboots (like a startup log or something) I would be interested in hearing.

Did you re-use the SIM card?

It may sound silly, but have you tried a new one? Maybe there's something wrong with the SIM causing the phone to believe it was hot-pulled so it reboots.

Your old screensaver was probably not designed for Symbian^3. A lot of things have changed with the graphics architecture since your E71's S60 3rd Ed.

Just had two random reboots today. Both happened today while sending texts in the "conversations" threaded messaging view. Both times it happened after the message was sent. It is interesting that this thing reboots pretty quickly (although I would rather it didn't do it at all). Has anyone else seen this?

I just wanted to post an update of where I am with this. I got a brand new SIM card over three weeks ago hoping that would fix my problem. I was then able to go a week without a reboot. It happened in the middle of the night and I only knew by checking the running apps (I always leave at least the menu as a running app and sometimes contacts or log also) and nothing is running. Since then it has rebooted every 6-7 days or so except for the last few days. I left more things running (contacts, log, messaging, menu, applications) and it rebooted after 3 days but did so in the middle of the night (all reboots after the SIM change have been after 12AM.

I am not sure if this is a software issue that will be fixed, if the phone is having an issue with AT&T in my area or if I have a hardware issue. I read about the hardware problem Nokia admitted to having and am wondering if there are different degrees of the issue (i.e., does EVERY phone with the hardware problem completely die or do some show similar but not as severe issues such as rebooting). Just not sure where to go with this. I may just watch it for a little more and probably call Nokia Customer Care just to get it logged if nothing else. I am somewhat okay with it rebooting every 6-7 days in the middle of the night (would prefer it not to) if that is the extent of it... before it was rebooting during the day multiple times. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Out of curiosity, have you noticed the device getting or being hot around the time of reboot? When you mention the phone reboots after 12AM, are you awake and using the phone or is it charging while you sleep?

I have noticed that mine will randomily reboot when I am connected to my laptop via USB. Seems to interact with Firefox sometimes. Dosen't happen besides that for me.

The reboots after the SIM card change occurred while I was sleeping, and of those only one occurred when it was charging. The reboots before the SIM card change when I saw it happen I did handle the phone and did not notice it was hot (at the time I was not looking for that but would have noticed if it was).

With the acknowledged manufacturing defect in one(?) of the batches, I would seriously consider a warranty exchange.

Are you in the US? I'm curious about how warranty exchanges work in the US. I know Nokia doesn't care to much about this market, yet, so I'm not expecting much.
