Nokia N8 >> Can't send audio message

Hey folks,

I've been reading through a lot of the posts on the site but I can't seem to find a fix for this problem I'm having with my unlocked Nokia N8. FYI, my cellular carrier is Wind Mobile (if that makes any difference).

The N8 has a feature where you can send an "audio message", but whenever I do this it just sits in the outbox, and I see a little bubble appear at the top saying "Conn. Failed" and directly underneath that it says "Conn. Unavailable".

I've read a little bit about access points but none of that seemed to explain how to remedy the situation. Does anybody know how to fix this? Or failing that, at least explain WHY this is happening???

I'm on Wind Mobile also with an unlocked N8, and I get the same problem. I select MMS as the access point I guess? But where is MMS defined? I checked under connectivity, but I don't see an MMS option.

I have never used it so I just tested on AT&T and it worked without any problems. In my sent folder I see an envelope with a note on it for the audio message. I used the default settings that the phone downloaded when I put in my sim the first time.

I notice on Wind Mobile's FAQ they talk of picture MMS, at 20 cents in Canada/US and $1 international, but they don't mention sound files. It quite possible they don't support that.

I just upgraded to Wind's $40 unbelievable amazing unlimited Canada/US talk, with unlimited data, and unlimited Canada/US/Global text messaging. That plan does NOT include MMS. They charge extra for that, so keep that in mind if you signed up for that plan. Better to send a sound attachment via an email.

Nokia progamed the Wind internet setting in wrong for users who insert a Wind sim card. They mistakenly inputed interent.windmobile.com as the access point which is incorrect. They probably did the same thing for the MMS settings. On some Nokia N8 phones with firmware for specific variants, there is absolutely no way to change MMS settings. The method that you would normally use to make changes to settings just aren't there in these phones. This includes at least 2 different North American versions. You can thank Nokia for that. The only known solution would be install a firmware that isn't crippled in this respect and to check to see if Nokia did in fact make the mistake in the MMS access point address.

On a side note, Wind's $40 Holiday Mircale plan DOES include MMS.

It is a problem with the phone. The fact that MMS works on AT&T doesn't prove anything. The OP isn't using AT&T. As already stated, Nokia screwed up in the programming of the data settings on this phone. (a typo). They probably screwed up on the MMS settings too. On some of these N8 phones, you can't add or edit MMS settiings at all. It is 100% a phone problem that only Wind Mobile customers will notice. Other phones will work fine on Wind when sending MMS. The fact that that there is no way to correct any possible error made in the settings by Nokia makes the phone unable to send any MMS.

@ computergeek541 --- You're right! It is a problem with the phone; Nokia did in fact enter the settings as : "mms.windmobile.com" as opposed to "mms.windmobile.ca"

The funny thing is, is that both Nokia & Wind Mobile don't seem to be fully aware of this. By "fully" I mean, it depends on which tech. support agent you end up speaking with. I spent 2 hours on the phone between Nokia USA and Wind Mobile. I was very persistent and finally got a hold of one rep who seemed to know what he was talking about. He said it's a known issue but it's not common knowledge amongst the reps. Nice.

Despite the fact that I've manually defined an MMS access point, it still won't recognize my access. I guess we'll have to wait for a firmware update.

To be honest, I've been getting mixed signals from both Nokia USA & Wind Mobile. Nokia tells me it is being sent from Wind Mobile, however from what I'm being told by Wind Mobile it's a manual setting in the phone that needs to be corrected.

I think that most of the data/settings is sent by the cellular provider (and inputted on the SIM card), but only if those basic MMS settings are inputted correctly from the cellular manufacturer will they work.

So did I that is why I said it is not the phone since it works on mine. I doubt that Nokia pre-program each phone with the settings of all carriers. I once took my 6620 to Sweden after I had unlocked it, this phone was the last carrier phone I used except for the iPhone 2G which I had for 2 weeks only and I unlocked it by using a code I found on the internet. It worked when I put in a Swedish prepaid sim and I doubt Nokia would have prepared that phone in advance?

Data and MMS settings are not read from the sim card and are not saved on it. Only the text messaging service centre and voicemail retreival number are read off the sim card. The Nokia N8 simply autodetects a Wind Mobile sim card. However, the settings are actually programmed in by Nokia and are part of the's phone's firmware. Unfortunately, Nokia has completely locked out the user's ability to do anything to correct the wrong MMS settings. The option doesn't even exist on certain versions of the firmware.

To fix this problem, you're going to have to install a firmware that allows you to edit the incorrect setting or you will have to wait for Nokia to fix this problem. Wind can't do a thing about this and honestly, it's not their problem.

Actually, that's exactly how it works. Data and MMS settings aren't even on your sim card. The N8 runs an autodetection routine to determine which company your sim card is from. However, all settings are already pre-programmed on the phone by Nokia.

The Wind person is competely right. The Nokia person you spoke to has no idea of what he or she talking about and completely making it up as he/she is going along (and happens to be 100% wrong). It's okay to not know everything but there was no reason for the Nokia person to b.s. you like that.

These settings are not sent by the cell company to your phone, they aren't part of the sim card, and they are not pushed through the network in any way. What it comes down to is the fact that Nokia has programmed the settings wrong.

You guys are full of ****. Handsets, no mater who the manufacture, and no mater the carrier, recieve the setting by OVAP (over the air provisioning). It's Winds fault for having the wrong settings, because they have setting for various handsets depending on what you have, they just made a typo for newer symbian phones.

Wind does not do over the air provisioning for data and mms settings. Nokia screwed up in the firmware. Your information isn't right. When people input settings in manually, they aren't doing it for the fun of it. They are doing it because data settings are not sent over the air.

Sometimes the settings are stored in the SIM card it self, depends on that carrier.

"When you switch on your device for the first time, the access points may be configured automatically based on the service
provider information in your SIM card. You can also receive the access points settings in a message from your service provider.
This might reduce the number of settings you need to enter yourself.
"

Taken from a Nokia Manual for the E65.

Access points are not stored in the firmware of the handset. And people have to enter setting manually sometimes not because they aren't sent over the air, but when the handset is new, or not supported by the carrier.

No where in your E65 manual does it says that access point information is saved on the sim card. It only says that settings are based on the service provider information (ie. the company of the sim card) and does not say which how much and which information is on the sim card itself. The N8 only check to see which company that the sim card is from and uses the settings on a pre-programmed database already on the phone.

I have taken a Rogers sim card and put it into a Rogers branded phone before and the settings were preconfigured. I have then taken the exact same phone and debranded it. After debranding that Nokia phone, the access points were correct but it was missing unnecessary access points such as "rogers streaming". After debranding, the access points were also typed in a slightly different manner. If they were saved on the sim card (which they aren't), the access points would have been identical both before and after debranding the phone.

You also said that people enter settings in sometimes because the device is new. If the data settings really were on the sim card, that wouldn't matter and they would just be read off of the sim card.

Wind does not send messages for automated data and mms settings.

I quoted the part that says that the information is stored on the SIM card. The N8 manual is sparse compaired to some, and others that I've seen in the past don't mention where the settings may com from.

When you have a branded phone, part of the branding includes the access points. If you debrand a phone and delete the access points, the handset will only have access to the access points stored on the SIM, now if your SIM is a bit old, they may be different than the ones that you had before.

I do not think that the access points of carriers are stored in the firmware in unlocked handset (other than branded sets) and it finds it way by the stored information from the SIM, OTAP, and manually setting them.

So I'm 100% sure that the setting come from the SIM it self, or over the air, and sometimes you have to do it yourself. So I have to ask, where did you gather the information that it's stored in the firmware?

So finally got an answer and it seems to be working - kind of.

Sent a few MMS to myself and sent some out to see if people got them, however, can't receive from others. Don't know why. Very annoying!

Anyway, since you can't edit the current MMS APN from mms.windmobile.COM to mms.windmobile.CA, you have to create a new one.

Settings -> Connectivity -> Settings -> Destinations -> Access point -> No to auto check for available access points -> Packet data -> enter name of your new APN ie. MMS 2 -> Internet -> click on newly made access point -> change name to mms.windmobile.ca and homepage to http://mms.windmobile.ca -> next click Options -> Advanced settings -> Proxy server address 74.115.197.70 -> Proxy port number 8080
