nokia messaging down again?

can't tell you if it was me or them. i went on mail.nokia.com and checked settings, checked the settings in the phone and then did a battery pull. about 40 minutes later, notices started cascading in.

I noticed a delay in getting email yesterday, but it seems okay-ish now on an E72.

If they don't get this sorted out, and quickly, they can forget about keeping business customers.

I know the email thing is probably much more complicated than I know, but what is the issue for Nokia? Does BB still hold some kind of patent on email delivery (push) that makes it more challenging for other companies to accomplish the same thing? Does it have anything to do with restrictions in NAM?

Heh, check the BB forum (or ask a friend with BB) and see the complaints there. :D BB goes down now and then but they are better communicating about it.

I got several dozen emails all weekend, so couldn't tell without having that grey/green circle thing on the N900. It's funny how half the service is great on the N97 (useful homescreen widget, status notification, etc) while half is less than desirable (HTML rendering speed, etc) but that the other half is deficient on N900 (useless widget, outgoing replies all defaulting to the first account, status, etc)

the last email from the gmail account i have is thursday. the last email from my domain (email hosted by google apps) is friday. both have had several emails saturday already which have not shown up.

so not only is it not working, it's not working asymmetrically between accounts.

if you can't rely on it, why have it? now i am having to get on with the touch or regular computer to check the email occasionally.

Nokia is supposed to be a software company????

2 Things:

1. - That comment was too easy of a layup for the haters.

2. - I never trust ANY push email service.

Heck my previous job gave us Blackberries and I still had to log in and check from time to time. Nokia is just worse at push email...

hey, i still think nokia makes some of the best tethering devices around. if they made an E51 with GPS, i might drop out of the E72 entirely and go with a smaller device to get my Itouch online with.

my problem with the push failure is that i can't just press a button on the e72 and check my email either. the failure of push, and the lack of alternatives on the phone without going into the browser and navigating to the webmail page is highly infuriating. at least on pre Messenger E71 you could just set it up to check the mail every 15 minutes. that may be where i go back to if the service doesn't straighten out soon.

it ran fine for quite a while after launch, now seems to be up and down at the drop of a molecule. if they can't get this right on big iron, Meego and S^3,4,5,6,etc on little stuff looks chancy too.

but i repeat myself....

^ By all means I wasn't calling you a hater. I said you gave the haters a layup comment.

I'll take pull over push any day. Depending on the type of day I'm having I'll check 5-15 times, and am totally fine with it. If it's urgent people text or call me anyway...

@droptopdown The E72 supports direct pull email just like the old clients. Just decline the E72 Nokia Messaging option when it prompts you and you can set up interval polling on IMAP/POP accounts.

The service has been bumpy for me lately for the first time in a long time with the data center move. The service has been improving for me over the past week but really need to pay attention to see how well it's working lately.

i will go back to pull. i don't really need to know the second an email comes in, but +/-15 minutes or so is required. i just loath the idea of going back in and resetting up all this stuff. i am sure it isn't bad if you have done it recently, but i prefer more of a "fire-and-forget" on email setup...

It still has its issues. Actually when I got my N900 is when I started having all the issues. Nokia Messaging refused to set up properly on the N900 like it did on my trial device. After deleting my account and having to create a new one from my E72 I was finally able to get it running on the N900. My one real gripe with the N900 is that when I tap a notification on an incoming email whenever I reply it always wants to send from my Ovi account. If I browse to the inbox it replies correctly. Annoying to send a reply from the incorrect mail box.

Always seems to want to send from the first account in it's order, regardless of which account the email was inbound to, it seems. For mine, that defaults to one of my 3 accounts in Nokia Messaging.
