Nokia = #BAILworthy: MeeGo device chief quits

Sounds more like Elop is shaking **** up and in the process getting rid of execs that don't need to be there. Hopefully the new management and chain of command is better than before.

maybe Elop is cleaning house. or maybe the rats are jumping ship. that said, dude was VP of their next-gen, bet-the-farm, supposed-soon-to-be released OS. surely you see the significance in this. given everything else that has happened recently, would you not concur that this is not "normal" and more than likely, a sign of inner turmoil?

Maybe the significance is that the next-gen, bet-the-farm OS has been in various stages of development for years without us ever seeing it in a marketable device while the competition has rolled on by. What's the point of working on it and versioning it if you never use it? It was supposed to be delivered this year, but that's not looking likely. Nokia's problem is execution. If this guy cannot execute, then he's out.

No more delays - now heads roll.

Yeah, it's either people *****ing about the incompetence of the current management or *****ing about the same people leaving LOL

However, the fact that they aren't releasing a meego product this year is troubling. They've had a lot of time to get it together without significant consequences, but Apple, Google and Microsoft are all going to be at each other's throats come the end of this year and I wonder if it'll actually be too late this time to get into the US market.

Why don't they just make Eldar Murtazin the new CEO? Every time that cat has got something so say, Nokia gets all frantic.

Sure Eldar probably doesn't know how to run a hot dog stand, but I'm not too confident that any recent member of upper management of Nokia could either...

^ I've been *****ng and moaning all year that all Nokia had to do was make a freakin N900 successor that was penta-band and much better battery life. That's it and nothing else!

This whole shake-up means nothing to me about getting Meego sooner.

Seriously, they can make a N97 Mini, but they can't make a successor for a device that could currently help stop the bleeding while getting the ball rolling for 2011?

IMO a N900 successor would have done very well, (since it would have been a whole new market for AT&T users) and would have bought Nokia an extra 6 months, but these guys have no concept of time whatsoever!

Android IMO may not be the perfect solution, but it's the perfect "waiting around solution" for me. Sure I still plan to see what Meego plans to bring to the table, but I also wonder how many have thrown their hands up in the air and said screw it... :disappoin

If you are referring to the N8 announcement, it was the other way around: Eldar knew when Nokia was going to make the announcement and timed his story accordingly. I.e. he did not trigger the announcement. Nor did he now trigger Jaaksi's departure, if that's what you are implying. :)

In any case, I guess Jaaksi either lost managements' trust in ability to deliver, disagreed with them on the direction of Maemo/Meego, or simply got pissed when they hired that guy from Palm... but yeah, the timing is a bit concerning... hopefully its for the best in the end and Meego development is sped up. :(

I doubt Meego is anywhere near ready for a consumer version. Nokia did confirm to Engadget that they will have an update on Meego by the end of the year, but to me, that sounds suspiciously similar to a combination of an announcement and some kind of video concept render.

An N9 in stores won't likely be available until at least next Summer.

It's not just his comments about the N8, he even had things to say about the N9:

"It's also worth noting that just yesterday Mobile-Review's Eldar Murtazin said that Nokia's N9 hardware is "near perfect" but the MeeGo software build is "not so good at the moment." Given all this, we can't see how Nokia could possibly ship its first MeeGo handset -- a device Nokia hopes to position against the iPhone 4 and best Android handsets in the US -- in 2010, do you?"

Sure maybe Jaaksi left because of the upper management shakeup, but things just seem to "mysteriously happen" when Eldar comes out and says things lately...

meego has been a disaster. the new CEO is trimming the folks responsible for where Nokia sits in the market. expect more....

Haha.. yeah, who knows what evil powers he has. Hmm. If he does, perhaps he is the real man behind Google? :D

Jimmy_K, bummer. :( What makes this a little difficult to intepret as far as Nokia goes is that their first "Meego" is supposedly a (*******?) child of a Maemo + Meego affair and clearly ahead of the vanilla Meego schedule (unless Elop decides to cancel it and go straight to the Meego proper) ... but even for Nokia it look VERY likely now that the device won't be in the sweaty geek hands before 2011.

I think that issue, the co-ownership, is going to be a problem for the platform. These types of deals in the past have almost never worked.

In this case, even worse: two giant, behemoth (hardware focused) corporations trying to out-nimble HTC, Apple and Google.
