Nokia 6280 vs Samsung Z400

G'day everyone,

I'm planning on upgrading to a 3G phone, and have been scouting out possibles on gsmarena and other sites. My basic criteria are:A slider phoneDecent build qualityReliability in terms of callsOther than that, I'm not particularly interested in funky multimedia stuff (I'll put an mp3 as my ring tone, and that's about it) or other funky 3G-type stuff (web access, push email etc), I have a desk and mp3 player for those things

As a result I've boiled it down to two phones - the Samsung and Nokia as listed in the title. Having been to Korea many times, I've used Samsungs there and been very impressed (it also means I am relatively familiar with their UI as well). Ok, so style-wise they're not very funky, but they do the job without any fuss. Also, for slider phones I have the impression (correct me if I'm wrong) that Samsungs make the best. I am aware of their poor battery life, but am not overly concerned about that - I plan on getting two chargers so I can charge my phone at home and work I do this for my Nokia atm anyway), and as for when i travel, the most common place I go is Korea, no problems there

I currently have a Nokia 6230i (apart from my first Siemens 5 yrs ago, all my phones have been Nokias), and it's done the job for me well over the past year or so. I'm familiar with the Nokia interface and the familiarity leads me to consider the Nokia too.

For those of you wondering why I'm considering such (relatively) old phones, part of the reason is geography (newer phones are either not coming to Australia at all or not coming for a while - have looked into buying from overseas and the cost is either prohibitively expensive or shops won't ship outside the US) and part is cost (newer phones that do arrive are costing an absolute fortune, ~A$800-1000 - these two lie in my price range and are pretty much the same in Australia, ~A$350). If I were to actually use HSDPA or something, I'd consider the ~A$800 for a Samsung Z720. But like I said, I have a desk and mp3 player for a reason - I don't want to be tied to the office even when I'm not there, so am not interested.

As for slider phones, having used bricks for so long I feel that it's time for a change, and I've used flippy phones before and find them way too small for my hands (I'm quite a big bloke).

Can anyone talk with any experience about using the Z400 and/or 6280? Any major dramas? Anything that would make you prefer one over the other?

Apologies for the long post. Any replies and advice would be greatly appreciated.

PS: Australia relies primarily on a GSM-based 900/1800 network. 3G (UMTS 2100) has rolled out by the major networks here (Hutchison Three, Telstra, SingTel Optus and Vodafone), and HSDPA is beginning to gather pace here as well.
