I'm about to sell my POS MDA and return to the s60 world. mainly because all the stuff i thought i would be doing with the MDA wasn't all that cracked up to be and any s60 can do almost anything WM5 can do.

But i need some more reviews on this. i read all the online reviews and one person who made a mini review here. But it isn't enough for me to pull the trigger over the other possible phones.

i have a budget of mainly $250-325. the 5500 seems ideal for me since i'm a mechianic and a rubber phone and metal like housing is just a key. my mda's screen busted day 1. and i got a replacement unit from then its been beyond babied. FM radio is another plus that i been wanting. camera wise probaly a little overkill i rarely use my camera but i would like to have it there if needed. mp3 player would be nice, i got a 2gb miniSD for the mda but i need a microSD and from what i hear its about 80$ for 1gb. wifi i never used on the mda, nor did i use the keyboard. so ideally i'm still upgrading phones here, to a more simple factor form. that flash light might be helpful to me and the other sport related stuff will never be used.

5500 users let me know what this phone lacks and stuff . but i'm wondering if it has the a2dp or w/e it is to listen to music thru BT>

take a look at my so called user review...

http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1005359&page=1&pp=15

its a great phone, just be prepared with the small screen... this aint your typical S60 phone and its not for the faint hearted...

no A2DP, but the headset is great!

Sounds like the 5500 is the phone for your dude.

As said, the small screen is a bit of a bummer but other than that it sounds ideal, especially as you're a mechanic and because of your budget.

friedbrains you were the one i was speaking of "mini review" =P

small screen, your review mentioned you had a 6230, would the screen be the same size as a s40? i had a 6200 before which is the same as a 6230 minus things.

i really like the idea of rubber/metal phone, speaker phone, price and size suits me very well. I'm hoping the rubber around it will do well against the elements that i deal with. no A2DP is ok with me, i have it on my MDA and never used it. just wondering for maybe when i'm bored.

do you think one of these would fit over it nicely?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Crystal-Clear-Plastic-Case-For-Nokia-5500_W0QQitemZ180035905800QQihZ008QQcategoryZ39841QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

and where can i get this phone from? ebay had like random sellers for 350ish.

5500 is the same size as the 6230i or the 8800, most probably the very same screen...

sorry, i dont use crystal case, i just dont like it, besides i think the rubber and metal in the 5500 is strong enough and good enough...

How durable is this thing Brains....from the pictures you've posted it looks like it would be solid as a friggin rock. When the N95 comes out I'd like to replace my 6230 as a beater phone and replace it with the 5500 but it's got to be tough. Be nice to have a s60 as a small durable back up.

LOL Man oh man, do I feel your pain... I switched to the Audiovox SMT-5600 because of size, and boredom mostly.... I wanted to try another Smartphone OS, but Windows Mobile is just CRAP. Period.... Ill never go back.

And if this 5500 would have been out before? A small Symbian phone? I would have wet myself It looks great. But I cant lie, I'm happy with my 3250. And I dont see that much of a difference between the two except for size.

i too was looking at the 5500.... But since i saw gnubox isnt out yet for s60v3 i decided to wait.. But i did notice the price has dropped about 20 bux in the last month.... So if you arent in a hurry maybe if you wait u'll save more money...

I also tried wm5 (tmobile sda) switched back quick!!! Symbian is the way to go!!

haha my n-gage keeps be happy when waiting in line still.

i'ved tried the SDA and i enjoyed it a little and then i got a chance to upgrade to a MDA free and i did. honestly i had this phone for 2 months and god... i went thru 3 replacements. my gf's MDA just freezes on her left and right. mines doing a good job but god i hate this phone. i thought hey i used the 3650 the mda's size isn't a big deal. but man i rather sport a 3650 then a MDA right now.

anyone know a place i can pick it up for? roughly $300 USD shipped. www.myworldphone.com has it for $314 shipped but someone told me they aren't the best people to deal with since they sent out some reman's and refribs before along with used phones and other stuff. I highly doubt i can get a reman/ refurb 5500 right now but just the thought of them doing that makes me wonder if they will cheap me on other things.

i honestly love the n73 but i'll probaly baby that phone more then the MDA, i think i'll pick one up when it drops near 375$ for the GF and be completely done with WM5

oh yea, since i've been out of the loop in the s60 world. i'm assuming S60 9 is the addition of that little task bar? or is it V3 that addition of little task bar. i was at the nokia store last week, where i saw all the new phones like n91,n73,n90,n80 and they all had that little task bar like thing under the clock. i figured just new OS 9 but i noticed v3 is out on most as well.

have you not seen the russian site that i included in my user-review???

you can watch videos where they poured water and milk on the 5500, and then let it be sucked by a vaccum cleaner, buried it on dirt, run tap water on it to clean it... i think they dropped it twice from 2nd floor, they also let a car ran over it 2x, before it finally died... let me see, if i can dig that link

ok, click here-> http://www.mforum.ru/phones/tests/036591.htm

i saw that.. oh man. the phone worked and i think after it got ran over the camera busted. but thru those other things it was fine. i was wondering the functions of it tho. i never knew that. probaly 100% after all those minus the car

hey that little task bar has been on s60 older versions like n70.... I currently use a n70 because it runs all the old programs.... there isnt quite as much softare out for s60v3... and definately not many free ones... you may want to buy a cheap s60 older fone until more stuff comes out for s60v3..

^ most of the usefull freeware for S60 are now ported to 3rd ed...

most of the usefull ones that you have to pay for are also ported or being ported, so i woudnt worry about that, S60 is not like UIQ, where the softwares are really annoyingly slow to arrive...

and i believe that NOW is the best time to own an S60 3rd ed,

BTW, to date i think there are about 220+ softwares for 3rd ed, and everyday it is growing...

I really liked the 5500. The dealbreaker for me was the bottom row of keys (*, 0 and #). They were harder to press than the others. It's as if the physical keys under the rubbery keymat were smaller, or just too close to the phone's bottom edge. I text a lot, so this was a bit of a problem. Otherwise, nice phone!

hmm...

you mean physically harder to press? or harder to hit it correctly? coz i had some problem hitting those keys mentioned on the 1st 3 days that i was using it... the problem was, i was not hitting the right spot of the keys... if you notice, ther are no convex or concave keypads, it is a relatively flat piece of rubber, hence where you think was the correct spot migh not be the actual key, hence you press on it and there is a sort of a feedback, but the actual keys are not yet hit...

eh, i dont text much another thing i thought was pointless for me to have an MDA.

i read a couple of ppl complain about that on other sites as well. i feel its of no big deal to me. just not i gotta find a place to see it for $300 even =P

Have had my 5500 for a couple of weeks and already loving it.

I did have one sim card registration error last week but a quick fiddle and all was well.

There is really no point in buying this phone and worrying about a case...this thing is pretty bomb proof and the point is you don't actually require a case.

I don't have an issue with the keypad...it is lovely and tactile, yep, the bottom row of keys are a tad smaller but there is no way it should be a deal breaker.

At the cost of a small screen, you are getting a SV3 phone that actually fits in your pocket and that can be chucked around without any worries.

Did I mention that this phone is available on Orange PAYG (unbranded) for ?150 from Argos in the UK....a stonking bargain.

Shame the pop port cover is gash though

indeed, the keypad aint a deal breaker at all....

the flashlight can be usefull as well...

i just got a 1GB microSD from iSmart, very new co. to to me and it works flawlessly, it is made in korea so issuposed it is a samsung flash chip got it for about U$40... now i dont have to worry about missing a call while doing a brisk walk, and i dont have to carry an ipod + phone... and it tells me how far i have walked and the calories burned!
