no sound in chat w/windows vista?

I can't get sound in chat no matter what I do. I bought 2 Hp computers and returned both for this reason. I am now using a Dell PC that was bought last May, and I can't get sound in chat with it either.I thought the problem was the with the PC's but it's not.I used the Dell some and until recently I had no problems with sound in chat. I hope somebody can help,I have done all I know how to do and nothing has worked.
