No Push Email on N8s Worldwide? Prove me wrong.

Discussions on Nokia's website seem to suggest that Push email is not working on Nokia N8. Nobody has yet stated that they've configured email on their N8 and are experiencing instant delivery.

Are You? If so, please tell us about it here in this thread. Please tell us your Carrier's name, your email provider's name, and all your settings except username and password. Also tell us any special steps you took, if any, to resolve issues setting it up.

I predict nobody actually has it working. Anywhere.

Mine certainly doesn't work. For the life of me, I don't know why Nokia cannot get this right. They force all email accounts to go through their service, and then they don't have the service work correctly. Brilliant.

Not that they're in any immediate danger of going up in smoke, but they certainly would deserve it if they did. Their support of their handsets is abysmal.

I replied to your other post in the general N8 thread, Push appears to work with my Mail for Exchange connection, there is at most a 1-2 second lag between it appearing on the server and it arriving on the phone. I checked the nokia support forums and didn't see mention of problems with the push email, do you have a link to the thread?

I haven't verified with my non-MfE accounts but I noticed they have 'Soonist' vs an 'Always On' for their sync time, so it might not be true realtime on them, perhaps it polls every minute or something..

Been playing with it some more, the arrivals of new emails are instant, moves and deletes however will not occur until a manual sync or a new email arrives ( I had moved 10-15 messages from my inbox and deleted a few, none went to the phone until a new message arrived ).

With my Yahoo and Ovi accounts the sync when set to 'Soonist' seems to happen anywhere from 4-15 minutes or as soon as I open the mail box. So not nearly as instant as the MfE.

No you are not forced, you can say no to the TOS.

However, they broke IMAP IDLE, so your mailbox doesn't stay connected for any real decent amount of time. I can live with 15 mins auto connect/download, I even thought about setting 5mins but for the sake of battery, I'll live with 15mins.

Maybe they broke IMAP IDLE on purpose to be forced to use their messaging servers.

Well I have two IMAP email accounts, both for my business, setup on my N8, and they arrive a second or two before my desktop. Better than instant.

I do also have MfE setup to a gmail account that those two IMAP accounts are forward to.

I notice if you setup a gmail account directly, it's slow. Sometimes 30 mins behind. I hated that, and got rid of it.

My email hoster for my IMAP business accounts is 1&1, and I have a $20/month 'professional' web host account. Not sure if that makes a difference. Seem to provide very solid IMAP email delivery.

email client is a little buggy, but for the most part, it works very well for me.

I expected at least the same level as my N97mini at least :D Actually in some ways it's better, like reading emails and what not but they regressed in the sending and receiving part.

The e-mail client on the N8 is fine -- certainly a lot better than in previous Symbian phones.

The trick, as ynohtna_lude said, is that if you set up a POP3/IMAP account, you should push Reject at the Terms of Service screen. In this case, you will not be using the Nokia Messaging mess, but rather, your phone will be connecting directly to the IMAP/POP3 server. Alas, IMAP IDLE is still broken, so you will have best result with a 5 - 15-minute polling interval instead.

My main complaint with the email support on the N8 is that you cannot Accept/Reject meetings in MfE (MS Exchange accounts). Also, you still don't see the inviter/invitee list in the Calendar, and you still cannot send out meeting invites from the phone. Quite embarrassing for a "smartphone" really -- at least on my Sony Ericsson C905a dumbphone, running SEVEN, I could do all these things..

I like Nokia. I like Symbian and the Maemo/Meego. I like their independently minded spirit. But inexplicable quirks like this are hardly going to make me give up my iPhone.

:-(

And it's certainly not going to make other people give up their Blackberries and Droids.

I don't think people are going to accept that, realistically speaking. We are used to things showing up almost instantly on our Blackberries and iPhones, and we begin to conduct our business affairs knowing that this is the way it is supposed to be working.

I've run across quite a few people who seem to be using email the way we used to use IM's and SMS...instantaneous communications.

It's probably not wise, exactly, but that is what they seem to be doing.

I've found that for this use it works... IMAP IDLE probably stays connected for up to 5mins easily.

I haven't done any controlled testing on how long it actually stays connected, but that's my observation. I have also noticed what some have already pointed out, is that IMAP GMail, even with the timed sync of say 15mins, sometimes, I don't get emails onto my phone until like an hour later or something. I'm not sure however if it's just that I missed the notification chime or not. My other hosted IMAP account doesn't seem to behave this way. This email is on my first homescreen while the gmail one is on my 2nd homescreen.

I find it absolutely crazy that the Nokia Messaging service can be absolutely flawless on the E72 yet be broken on the N8. This tells me that the client is broken on the N8. Nokia isn't winning anyone over with this flaky crap.

This is silly. When has Nokia's email client ever had true push? Or better yet works every time? Never. At least not in any Nokia device I've owned. And I've had a few.
