fyi metro charges $5 on the lower plans but includes it with the higher plans

i think tho a brew or java app would be nice if it supported more services besides just aim.

Got a text from cricket today...

says they wont allow text messages from aim to be sent to cricket phones as of 05/01/08...

this sucks balls!!!

Yes it does. For those of my frienRAB who are unfortunate enough to have signed up with a contract-based carrier and don't have unlimited texts, AIM's their main method for getting ahold of me...

yeah.. they are discontinuing the service because it provides no revenue... hopefully they launch some kind of application that will bring im to cricket.

The bigger loss to me is AIM Forwarding, I really like getting AIM texts when I was away from my computer. As for loss of revenue I am a 4 year customer considering canceling. I'm sure AOL charges for the gateway and cricket is looking to cut costs.

well, a java app would be nice...i think cricket may be stepping away from brew...even if not, the java app would be better as it would work on more hanRABets...

to my knowledge/the way it appeared in the email i got, aol does not charge but cricket must maintain the gateway. I gave my own reasoning in a previous post. and i do understand your point, but as i said i think im in general is declining as more and more people are using text messaging for instant communications. that said i use the s' out of google talk on blackberry. mostly because it's there. everywhere i go the google is there. on my email. on my phone. everywhere. i can't get away from it. I think it's stalking me!!!

I agree on the IM decline, I've had an AIM account since AOL offered it apart from AOL and probably 2/3 of my "buddies" haven't signed on in years. I've regained some of that loss by adding them back in as SMS buddies.

It comes down to reducing network resources where there is no profit. The gateway is indeed free but the resouces to deliver that message aren't. It's really a no brainer when the entire demographic of cricket customers is taken into account. This isn't to mention that the AIM/AOL gateway is far from perfect. The future of their company in turmoil. Basically just not worth it.

its stupid to do this. aim are texts just like everything else. i suppose cricket thinks they can cut aim and they will reduce texts, but that just means people will text phone to phone, or actually call which is 3000 times worse than a text message.

what they should be doing is offering applications like aim or msn or yahoo or unlimited texts to any of these services to prevent people from using their phone for calls. its common knowledge that texts reduce voice calls which reduce cost.

why would you think that im not serious.

as a cricket customer you pay your 50 dollars for unlimited calling and texting. people on the aim side download their free software that has the capabilities of im to mobile. neither side is making a profit from im to mobile, and neither is losing. cricket is still getting your 50 dollars.

Actually the SMS platform is far more suseptible to congestion, than a wireless switch is. I'd rather someone place a call and leave it active for 4 hours than send 3 TXT msgs. Not too mention most TXT Msgs have to go thru an intercarrier txt messenging platform which is also another fee to cricket.

thats fine. i just think that SMS is better than voice, because of the basics of how it works. i don't understand why companies don't put more stock in it, increase their control channel bandwidth and push it. probably because traditional carriers get more money for voice calls :)

i think we should start a thread about telecom background. i know GSM inside out from RF engineering to switch tech, radio turn up, planning. CDMA i only know the basics, typical bandwidth info and vocoding crap. i also have a large UMTS/HSDPA background from Lucent.

that is not completely accurate...

aol is making money on banner space among other things just by web traffic...add to that any other products, services or linking fees they profit from and they are making some pretty nice revenue by providing this free service...

cricket on the other hand is not making any revenue, and you say that they are not losing anything...well that is not true either...

they are using their band on cdma...you need to take into account traffic and other factor like "cellular breathing" and then reevaluate your statements...

it is 100% logical for cricket to stop a service that uses their resources, but provides them with no additional revenue...

i am a CIS major which is computer based, but is still a business degree...it is obvious to me and any other business-minded individual why cricket is making this decision...

not that i don't think that it sucks, but it is still a logical choice for them to make.

I think that would be cool. I am you polar opposite. Have a taste of GSM with the bulk of my expeience in CDMA. I'd be interested in some discussions on UMTS as I handled the install, integration and deployment of EVDO in my current market. All this new technology is really good stuff, with so much more coming down the pipe.
