No God in His Dark Materials film

Sad news. Though on one hand, it's one way to spike the fundamentalists aggression before it even starts.

Freedom should, however, cut both ways. If Mel Gibson's hotly debated Passion flick can be distributed and shown undiluted to those who choose to see it, I'd like to see the other side of the coin being afforded the same respect.

It really is a shame for all sane churchgoers, who are probably repelled by commercial censorship, and may even be Pullman fans too!

Sorry but I have never heard so much bull as an excuse. This film will be as popular as Harry Potter no problem, with or without the religious undertones, so what is new lines problem? Are they affraid of the wrath of George Bush's bible brigade. Religion is a fundamental part of the story, and everyone involved should be ashmaed of this decision. Suerly Pullman neeRAB to take a firm line on this.

"In his award-winning trilogy, His Dark Materials, Philip Pullman deals with the theme of organized religion and portrays 'The Church' as a corrupting and coercive force upon society and is actually described as "wrong and bad".

On the strength of the theory that the film would suffer financially if such a viewpoint were advanced in it, New Line Cinema has decided to alter that side of the books considerably in order to appease American Christian groups."

Surely this just proves Philip Pullman's point even more?! What a shame New Line have taken this stance.

I'm gutted - maybe a boycott is in order.

Is New Line USA funded? I'm convinced that this idea is just because they're worried about losing the American audience....

this is very sad
