my home recently burnt down and my insurance covered it with many problems arising after the builders finished.i have since had some extra work done which cost me over$20000.(extra room added on,hallway wall taken out to create bigger bedroom, hallway closed off, bathroom wall taken out to make bathroom bigger and less hallway, bathroon refitted and so on..)i did not get approval for this work and now the building inspector is coming back to investigate my previous complaints.they will obviously notice the extra work done with no council approval...what can the do to me...am i in major trouble...

"..council approval.." ???? You must be in England.

I have lived in many different areas of the US, and in every place I have ever lived you need "permits" on every major change you do to any building (residential or commercial), usually from your local County Building and Zoning Dept. Here, if you do "unpermitted work" they can come down on you like a ton of bricks (american slang for really really hard) even up to making you tear it out and do it over plus levying fines.
