Before the 1950s,televison was little more than a luxury for the wealthiest families.By 1957,however,there were almost 40 million televions in use; almost as many sets as there were families.Televison gradually replaced newspapers, magazines, and radio as the main source of information.

1.What results from the 1960 debate led historians to realize the imporatance of television to politicians?
2.Why do you think image has become such a crucial issue to politicians?

Yea it can make or break a candidate. Nixon-Kennedy debate no one remembered what was said, only how the candidates looked. It is amazing when you compare Kennedy , who won the debate and the election and had a very short term. He would have been better off if he would have lost debate. Nixon lost debate because he looked bad. But many are reconsidering his time in office as being very productive.
