In the real-life video-game console shoot-'em-up contest, Nintendo is racking up the points, Microsoft has a respectable score, and Sony keeps dropping the joystick.
The Japanese producer of the new PlayStation 3 is either in denial about not meeting shipping goals for the system, or just stalling before it admits that it can?t produce 6 million units by the spring.
?I have no doubts that if they have enough inventory available, they could sell several million by that time, but it's all about their delivery of inventory,? said Anita Frazier, analyst with the NPD Group.
On Thursday, the NPD Group released November video game data that reflects a 34% jump in U.S. sales. The newest generation of gaming was led by the Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) Xbox 360, then Nintendo (other-otc: NTDOY - news - people ) ?s Wii trailed by the PS3 from Sony (nyse: SNE - news - people ).
Of the three new consoles, the year-old Xbox 360 sold the most units, with 511,000 for the month, followed by the Wii?s 476,000.
Sony moved just 197,000 PS3 units, completely missing its promised 400,000 for the United States by yearend. Obviously, that sent gamers elsewhere.
Still, the electronic entertainment giant insists that it will hit its 6 million mark by March, a goal Nintendo is more apt to attain with the Wii.
Sony unveiled the PS3 to Japan?s retail market a week before its U.S. debut. The company could only make 100,000 units were available due to production problems with the high-definition DVD player. The console immediately sold out.
In March, Sony plans to release the PS3 in Europe.
Eric Pratt, senior director of hardware teardown analysis at iSuppli, said the complexity of the hardware that is contributing to the PS3 production woes. Pratt and his crew dissected the PS3 and consider its construction a ?masterpiece,? one that ?has legs? and will be widely adopted next year.
?Next year at this time, when we get into the holiday season they?re going to be in demand again,? Pratt said. ?If you were going to buy a system, then the PS3 is an incredible system if you?re looking to make the investment.?
Meanwhile, Sony benefited from substantial sales of its six-year-old PlayStation 2 console. Sales of the system trumped all three new consoles, selling 664,000 units during November.
Shares of Sony edged up in Friday trading to $40.11, in the middle of the stock?s 52-week range.
Nintendo rose 1.2%, or 35 cents. Microsoft stock also saw slight gains, trading at $28.94.

Nintendo's console isn't even next gen. I guarentee it's being replaced with in 3 years. The HDTV market is about to TAKE OFF. The number of HD tv's to standard tv's in the stores now adays is incredibly slanted towards HD.

This will kill the life of the Wii. Maybe they will update the hardware later on? Or make an add on or something.

The XBOX and Ps3 both have the hardware built in to last about 6-7 years before a refresh is needed.

I would like an explanation of how the Wii is not "next gen." Let's see...last generation = XBOX, PS2, Gamecube...next after that is XBOX 360, PS3, and Wii. Hmmm...

theres a reason why they change the original ninten do evolution to Wii, cause its not mind breaking evolution. but just for fun wii. and this came from wii hater. (for all "this came from,.. "faggots)

HDTVs barely represent 5% of American households w/ a TV, they still have a LOOOOOONNNNGGGG way to go before they are in the majority regardless of how many you see in the store. Sadly, I still see plenty of SDTVs on shelves. If the Wii takes an early lead, I don't look for them to give it up anytime soon. I don't think graphics will hold them back. Just look at how many PS2s sold after the 360 launched. Look at how long the original black and white game boy lasted...same for the NES. Hell, look at how the PS2 trounced the xbox despite it being pretty superior to the PS2 in terms of power and graphics. People aren't all about cutting edge graphics, economics and availability of games.

If I had to guess, Nintendo is shooting for 5-6 years. MS will probably do the same. Sony says they're shooting for a longer window...but I'll believe it when I see it. When Nintendo and MS gear up to go for their new system, I bet sony will be right there along side them.

its next gen compared to a gamecube only. its not a step up in graphics to next gen quality, relax wii fanboys, im not bashing it, just stating the graphics arent up to par with "next" gen systems. am i denying it to be fun, nope, not at all, im not bashing it. if my friend buys one, ill play his, but for me personally, i dont have a need for one to play single player all the time. for multiplayer, i see where the fun factor will sky rocket.
