i have to write an essay in order to apply for a trip next feb. to nicaragua. it's through my church/school and we go and build homes in a poor town. so here's my essay, please feel free to revise and edit it/give suggestions! i realllly need some feedback so if you could help me out i would appriciate it so much, thanks!!

I know this must be a grueling process and you said not to write too much so I’ll try my best to keep this condensed. So the question in all of your minds, why pick me over the other applicants? I’ll start by saying how much of an impact community service has had on me developing and growing as a person. Being a Girl Scout since kindergarten, it has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. The fun little projects we used to enjoy such as coloring cards for meals on wheels recipients has now developed into more personal, fulfilling projects. Not to say that the meals on wheels cards didn’t make a difference to those who received them, but the troop was more interested in the coloring aspect of it. I guess it’s not so much that the projects have changed, but more that we’ve matured and realized how rewarding helping others can be.

A lot of people I am acquainted with do community service because they need hours for honor society and some just because it looks good for college. Although yes, this may be true I have different intentions. Call me cheesy or selfish or whatever you may, but the way I feel after I know that I’ve truly made someone’s day little bit easier is the most incredible, indescribable emotion I’ve yet experienced. I feel like I’ve found something I’m good at and a place that I am needed; that without me handing out food a family might not eat tonight, or that because I helped sort dresses, a girl who otherwise would not be able to afford one will now have a beautiful prom dress. Knowing that no matter how much you do, there is always more to be done is what keeps me going.

I am hardworking and am willing to do any type of assignment. In fact, at my old job I spent basically the whole time taking out the trash and cleaning bathrooms. Not necessarily the most glamorous of tasks, but I was always sure to do them with a great attitude and a friendly smile. I try to incorporate a positive outlook into everything I do, and will certainly bring it to Nicaragua if selected.

Although I may not be a straight A student or school president or anything noteworthy like that, helping people is something I am extremely passionate about and would absolutely love to take part in this. I’m looking for an experience like nothing I’ve endured before and I think this is my opportunity. I really hope you understand what an excellent member of the team I have the potential to be. I have a lot to offer Nicaragua and I think Nicaragua has a lot to offer me as well.
