The National Hurricane Center says the storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane and slow its forward movement during the next 24 hours.
Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 205 miles from the center. Smith Shoal Light, near Key West, FL, reported a wind gust of 70 mph this afternoon.
Tropical storm conditions are expected to reach the northern Gulf coast by late Monday, with hurricane conditions expected Tuesday.
Flooding is expected with this storm along the northern Gulf coast. The National Hurricane Center says water could reach six to 12 feet above ground if the peak storm surge occurs during high tide.
