How in the hell do you compare "portal" to a search engine?

Well my good man, to me at least, when I can SEARCH and browse for what I want (like I can with Merlins Portal by clicking "Search")...whether something is a portal, or a search engine, the semantics of it all is trivial to me as long as I am searching and finding what I need. Granted, I will agree with you that binsearch.info is a valuable search tool, actually being one of the better search interfaces I have used. I like Merlins Portal simply due to its "prettiness" if you will, and indexing of what is available. Sometimes I like to simply browse the catalog than just straight search.

Well true, but it's a forum, so semantics aside, then FST could be classified as a search engine, I thinks of "search egine" as what I listed, because they search the "entire" realm of Usenet.

Newzleech was one of the few usenet "search engine" sites that also had a section of user-submitted NZBs - "posts" - that could also be searched. Sadly, the verfied NZB posts were disabled.
