Newsgroup Noob Question

I have been looking into the newsgroups for awhile and I found out that my ISP has newsgroup access. They do not limit the download from the newsgroup except for the service DL/UL limits. This is 60GB down a month, but it is not monitored, because I exceed that by far using torrents.

They claim to have thoudands of newsgroups on their servers, but do you think any of them are the groups I will need to access movies, music etc...? My ISP is COX CAble, so if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate the input. Thought this would be a good route instead of forking over cash to try to figure out the whole newsgroup thing.

Good deal. I have checked out that page already. Now I just need to figure out what groups to subscribe to. any advice? Clueless when it comes to newsgroups. What do you recommend for a client? I keep hearing grabit?

I first used grabit but found newsleecher to better suit my needs. As for what groups to subscribe to it all depends on what your looking for, once your client is configered and you pull your group list you can just browse it and find all the groups you like.

But I find that pulling all the headers is a waist of time and bandwidth and much prefer to get my .nzb from sites like this.

Here's a link to many of the popular groups

I use Newsbin myself. It has a nice set of features and is frequently updated. If you register (very reasonable cost), you get free updates for life unlike some other apps.

Really hate to "hijack" a thread like this but I just have to give thanks to DSLFreak. Just recently got into newsgroups and am using cox myself. But guess what? I was only running with two threads open for the server. With your tip, I'm now running at twice my previous speed!
