My friends baby was born at 31 weeks 4 days. Hes now 31 weeks 6 days, he has a feeding tube. Someone told me that the baby would develop the instinct to suck around week 32, so does that mean that the baby will only have the feeding tube for a few more days. Or if he does develop the instinct to suck will he still have the feeding tube in and eat from a bottle?
Overall hes healthy, other than the feeding tube issue. Hes breathing on his own and keeping his body temperature. Hes 4 pounds 9 oz. I've seen pictures of babies with a feeding tube in their nose and their getting fed with a bottle. If he does "learn" to suck and if hes able to use a bottle soon, will his mother be able to feed him? Also, how long on average does it take a premature baby of good health to learn to feed from a bottle?
