Newbie With Questions

Hey All...

I have been heavily researching bikes for the past 4 to 6 weeks. I just passed my MSF course this past weekend and plan on getting the M on my license this week.

Now I need to get a bike....

The MSF course had 125's for the riding. I have spoken to a couple of salesmen, and they steer me toward the M50/C50 as a first bike. I spoke with other people (including a couple of course coaches) and they agree that the 800cc of the M and C50's is not a bad first bike. What do you all think? I am leaning more toward the M50 if I go that route.

I am looking for a night/weekend casual ride bike. Maybe commuting to work on it every once in a while. A group ride every now and then if I can get in one. Physically, the bike fits me well.

Then new or used...I have no idea...I go back and forth on that point...

They've gotten great reviews as first bikes. If you handled the rider course well, you shouldn't have any problem with those two.

As for new or used, that's a personal decision. Some people like (and can afford) the "peace of mind" that a warranty brings. Others, often those who do their own wrenching, consider it too expensive and buy clean used bikes. In either case, we're here to help you solve any dilemma.
 
I got my license last month after passing the course, I bought a new '06 M50 and couldn't be happier. In fact, tomorrow I'm taking her in for the 600 mile service!!!.

The bike's handling is quite benign, not too heavy, plenty of power for a newbie (including freeway speeds) and it looks, frankly, like a far more expensive cruiser. I've had other bikers make u turns and pull up, just to ask what is it!!!.

My other choice was a Ninja 650R, but I just felt the cruiser would be more comfortable, and I would have an easier time getting used to handling a bike because of it. My riding, like you, is mostly weekend pleasure crusing.
 
I finally got my first bike as well and it is an 06 black M50. I'm very happy with it. It is just the right size for me. I bought it new because I rather have that piece of mind with the warranty and I'm not very good with putting a wrench to a motorcycle. A new or used bike is really up to you. Nobody really has to buy a motorcycle. But these days plenty of people want to. And you may be one of them. Before you plunk down your money, swing your leg over the seat and feel that warm breeze of freedom, you need to resolve several critical issues.

Hey Rob...You sound like me...I just passed the course this past weekend...got my E today and now am having severe 2nd thoughts about even riding out there in the "real world". Alot of crazy drivers here in Tampa...anyway, I just visited the dealer again today and I think if I was going to make a decision on a bike it would be the C50. Seems like a great bike for the money and for a first bike it makes alot of sense. Good luck with whatever you decide and like they say in the class...STAY SAFE OUT THERE!
 
The 800cc Intruder was my first bike to own (I had some experience on others before) and I loved it as a first bike. It had enough power to get you out of a bad spot in traffic if need and has great handling.
They are well built and easy to carefore.... I'd say go for it.

I purchased an '06 M50 and love it. It handles great, whether on the highway or in the twisties. I thought about the C50 as well. It too is a great bike. I just wanted to have a sportier look and favored the bob style fender and alloy wheels.
I've ridden with a variety of styles of bikes and it pulls decently. Of course, if a VMax or crotch rocket wants to lose you, he will. But if everyone in the group is out to push it but be safe, you'll be right in there with them. If I could change anything on the bike, it would be for more power. However, the bike looks cool and will solicit all kind of positive reviews. Add to this the community on this board, with access to pic's of cool mod's and helpful hints, and your set. I chose new because I wanted to start with a clean slate.

The M50 was my first bike as well. I prefered it greatly over the 125 Nighthawks used in the MSF class. It felt more stable at low speeds and I was far more comfortable sitting on the M50. I was always moving around on the MSF bike.

I also was considering the SV650 and Ninja 650R. Went with the lower seat height for my first bike.
