Newbie = Very Confused!!!

Hi all, I lost my tmobile Dash phone and so my friend gave me his AT&T BB CURVE 8310. I called ATT and was give the code to unlock the phone, which I did. Then I searched online for ways of erasing or restoring to the factory setup. Well I came across the bit about using JL_Cmder, so I did, and it wiped everything off. Now I am trying to install the OS from T-mobile, and I launch the software and it goes through everything but does not actually install anything on the phone?! I tried installing it through the Desktop Manager, but it doesnt recognize the software that I have downloaded from T-mobile.

So here are my questions:

1. Will I not be able to install the T-Mobile OS onto the ATT 8310 even after doing a wipe fith JL_Cmder???

2. Is there an official RIM OS that doesnt have all the bloated carrier branding and nonsense that I can or should use? If so, is it better to go this route (as I didnt really care much for the T-mobile crap that came on my dash) than installing the official T-mobile OS?

I appreciate any assistance that I can get in regards to this, thank you all in advance. I look forward to learning a lot about this great device from all of you here.

1. You don't need to do a wipe with JL commander you can do it manually on the phone through:

options> security options>general settings>menu button>wipe handheld>click continue> Type the word Blackberry> click trackball

2. I would just keep the original att OS and change the theme. You can add the T-mobile OS on there as long as you remove the vendor.xml file but if you are trying to avoid all the carrier branding I noticed the att OS has less than the T-mobile one as long as you hide most of the icons on the theme.

Actually you need JL commander, or a app like it.All the wipe does on the BB is remove apps and personal info. JL cmdr formats your BB, ie; it removes the entire OS. T mobile OS is for 8320 you have a 8310. It won't work. You can use any OS by deleting vendor xml as long as its for the 8310~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~

Great, thank you both very much for all your help! I noticed one of the members on this forum (Gary F) had a link to dl the os without all the carrier crap. So at the moment I am dl'ing the proper OS for the correct phone. I hope it works! I cant wait to start using this phone!

If you're already this far I would recommend also to upgrade to the 4.5 software as well. This will be quite the upgrade from the current 4.2 version that is offered stock on the 8310

Yea I am downloading 4.5 at the moment. I noticed that ATT offered 4.2 but this other one "HONG KONG CSL" is version 4.5. I just hope it works without any problems....

That's right. Make sure you remove PTT by moving KnJCDE.cod and net_rim_bb_phone_ptt_app.cod from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\8310-v4.5.x.xx_Px.x.x.xx\Java to anywhere you want. Actually you can delete them. Tmo doesn't have PTT. Also you may want to delete the att themes or add other carrier themes. Search here for Blackberry Master Conrol program. Follow the instructions it makes it easy to remove unwanted or add stuff from the os. Also the instructions for installing OS's posted here on the Stack tell how to delete or install themes from other carriers.

Thank you all for your help. It seems that I am still doing something wrong! The phone shows the white background with the 507 code. I run the exe for the OS and it does its thing and says that its been installed and to run desktop manager! But nothing has been installed! When I go into desktop manager and try to install the OS from there, it doesnt recognize the file type and gives me an error code!

Any ideas???

Just ran through the thread. First on your PC go to add remove and make certian that you have run and installed the 4.5 to your PC. Also what version of desktop manager are you using. You can also try going into programs files/common files/research in motion/app loader and clicking on loader file. Try that and then we will go from there.

I was using ver 4.6 but I just noticed that there is a ver 4.7 so i am currently installing it , i hope this fixes it for me!
