newbie, savage 650 exhaust

I want to go straight pipes on my ls650. Hard part is that I can't find anyplace that offers them. I want to do it for looks mainly. I hate the look of that HUGE muffler body sittin on a nice clean bike. Secondly, I know there are performance benefits to doing straight pipes. If there are straight pipes for my bike, what do I have to do to when putting them on? I heard someone say something a while back about rejet my carb. What does that entail? Beyond that what possibly am I looking at as far as the sound of straight pipes versus muffler? I have never seen this on a smaller style bike before and I'm eager to learn more about it. any help in this area will be greatly appriciated.
Thanks,
kevin

Hey Kevin...Welcome!

I started to answer this post for you yesterday, and got sidetracked!

Here is a link to some sound bytes that will give you an idea of what some of the various products sound like for this bike. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?board=tech;action=display;num=1100726448

By far my favorite is the Harley Screamin' Eagle slip-on. If I remember, the Raask straight pipe was harsh sounding.

As far as carb modding, use the search button up top. Use these keywords. Savage Carb Mod Intimid8er

It'll bring up some threads where I've posted an article for the steps to mod the carb.

It is not necessary to rejet right away, but if you do change the exhaust, you may have to.

As to what jet size will work for your bike. (Shrugs shoulders) I dunno. Something like that is all relative to where you are geographically. What would work for me here 3 ft above sea level and 87% relative humidity (this morning at 7:00 a.m.), will not work for someone in West Virginia. Jetting is all relative to where you are at. Best thing to do is just buy a jet kit that comes with multiple sizes. Sometimes they are just slightly if at all more expensive. Sure there is more work involved. But in the end you will have put the correct pieces in place for your bike in your situation. When all is said and done, a carb is as only good as the atmosphere around it.

The performance benefit from a straight pipe is lots of noise and a loss of torque. You won't be able to get away from the cops who stop you to issue noise citations, and your neighbors will storm your house with torches and pitchforks.

+1. It's almost always a power-losing mod. It's widely assumed that more airflow = more power. Not necessarily true at all, and if you live near me I'll stuff a banana up there. :-)

thanks for the links the mp3s. those really sound different. i have to agree with you on the screaming eagle slide-on. that sounds the best. as for rejetting, i live in wisconsin. and as long as its something that can wait for a while then thats fine with me. i assume that i can go and check out online for a slide-on. but thanks for the help and clearing that stuff up for me it really helps.
