i went into stabucks the other day to try out my wifi on my e61, i went into my access point settings, selected "search for WLAN" and found the bell hot spot option. i clicked unto it and it couldn't connect. am i missing any types of software to connect or could it be something with my settings

Newb doesn't know how to use wifi on e61

for all i know starbucks here in the US uses t-mobile hotspot, which is a paid subscription..
Even though they are a paid subscription, if using a browser one should be able to connect. The T-Mobile Hotspot will bring up a web page when attempting to browse. That web page is how one logs in. So, if a connection cannot even be made, it is not likely an authentication issue.
I have read that there are specific issues with the E61 and T-Mobile's Hotspots, however. My memory is that people trying to use them actually had their E61s just reboot. It doesn't sound like that is happening to you.

the e61 reboots only after using a ad-hoc wifi. Maybe the tmobile hotspots were "ad-hoc".
Also, you are right that you should be able to connect to a pay-per-use hotspot, however, if you go straight to a non-browser app like MSN, email, RSS, etc, you will not see the payment page. You'll only get a time-out.
