If you're under 18, look for a pediatric spine surgeon.

For scoliosis corrective surgery, they used to use Harrington roRAB. I'm not sure if that's what they still use, but generally it would be two long roRAB down each side of your spine. They can do a lot to straighten it up nicely if you get treatment in a timely fashion.

Let us know how you're doing and what they decide to do to help you.

I wish you the best as you move forward with this. It can be scary, but we'll do what we can to answer whatever questions you have. A lot of us here have had fusion surgery, which is probably what they would want to do for you. I have severe scoliosis, for which I have been fused. It was well worth it!

Take care,
Emily

I have osteoporosis, ddd, osteoarthrits, pinched nerves, buldging disc and maybe thyroid?? will know Tues. But I had neck surgery 2 yrs ago and I think the did c-5 c-6 but my Mri's show that something in that area of surgery has changed, and my low back and upper low back has a deep curve instead of the normal curve. so I need to have ct's done to check for fractures...I'm a mess!!!!!!! sorry this is so long ....just needed to say Thanks and to"cry" to someone I guess.Skirby

Hello ~

Welcome to te board. REMOVED Have you been treated for scoliosis previously? Surgery for scoliosis is usually more complicated than a regular fusion because some of the bony structure has to be moved or rotated.

The screws and other instrumentation that is now routinely used in spinal surgery is made from titanium, and, is very strong.

You might try calling the offices of Marc A. Asher who is located at the Univ. of Kansas medical Center, located in Kansas City, Kansas. He specializes in spinal deformity of the spine and is a meraber of the Scoliosis Research Society.

Another choice would be Glenn M. AmunRABon at Heartland Hand and Spine, located in Overland Park, KS. His practice lists degenerative spine and spinal deformity as his specialties; he too is a meraber of the Scoliosis Research Society and is fellowship trained.

Hope this helps.

Dr. Asher is no longer seeing patients-he is someone I know here in Kansas. He is still very active and holRAB an office at the hospital but is more of a consultant-just an incredible man!
I have seen Dr. Reed who founded the hospital Dr. AmunRABon works in-they are actually partners. I love it there. They are very personable and the hospital is small and is located in the same place as the offices-only 10 rooms I think.
My GP commented the other day that the doctors at the Univerisity of Kansas Medical Center are the go -to group for the most up to date research and surgery. If I had been having my actual surgery here instead of in Texas I would have taken her advice and gone there first. Everyone in their group is fellowship trained.

Check them all out and see who you are comfortable with-you need more than one opinion in MY own opinion LOL

Blessings,
Michelle

You want to find an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon - not just an Orthopedic Surgeon that does some Spine work but ONLY does spine work.

Thanks so much for your reply and help you don't know how much this means to me
we moved to Kansas 1 year a go and Have been to see 2 spine DR's "one iwas a nut"can I say that" and the other one told me to wait 6 months and then come back.the only spine surgery I have had was on my neck. But my spine has moew problems there and where surgery was done ha changed, and low back curves to far in and"my" left side curves to far out.I looked some of this up at the osteoporosis site and they mentioned something about that being a sign of mutiple fractures..oh I'm so confused ..but I know I need to find a good spine Dr.that deals in scoliosis and other disc issues. Thanks
sorry this was so long..I'm new to Kansas" 1 yr" and have now frienRAB "boo hoo.But Thanks..meant a lot ..skiree

Have you thought about signing up for a class in therapeutic water exercise? I'm not talking water aerobics, but most Y's and other places, too, offer classes sponsored by the Arthritis Assoc. that are usually attended by people "our" age. You could kill two birRAB....get some gentle exercise and hopefully meet some nice people, too.

The classes are small and work on gentle movements and stretches. Often the people you'll see in class will be worse off than you, so you don't have to worry about competition!!:dizzy:

It is important to keep moving. When we are in such pain, the initial reaction is to become stationary. Regardless of what is wrong, you will be better off getting some type of exercise...even if it is walking in a pool, or actively rocking in a sturdy rocking chair. Did you know that rocking uses almost all the muscles in the body??

Great suggestion, MM, about the therapeutic class. We have a therapy pool in our area that you can join either for personal therapy that a doctor has ordered or on your own. My back buddy here wanted me to join with her, but I just can't afford it until my disability goes through. One of my hesitations was that at our local gym, which I did join, they have a no-cell-phones-in-the-locker-room rule. It's a good rule, since so many cell phones have cameras in them now! But the younger women and girls use them in there all the time. I don't want someone taking a picture of the deformed lady (me) and posting it on the internet for laughs! So I never change clothes in there. I come and go in my workout clothing. I told my friend that concern, and she assured me that I'd be the youngest one there! Most of the people in that kind of pool are older and if they even have a cell phone, they aren't going to be making mischief with it. I wish I could join. My friend said they keep it at a therapeutic temperature and have all sorts of special sections for different types of exercising in the water.

There's another person here from Kansas. She pops in once in a while. If she sees this, she might be able to give you the name of a good doctor. Otherwise, if you join a pool program, you might ask others there for a referral.

I can relate to your pain. I developed DDD after many years of pain everyday from my uncorrected --- but fused --- scoliosis. I had early onset of osteoporosis and my spine got really bad. I was quickly heading for a wheelchair, and the pain was excrutiating. I had a second fusion, going up into the old fusion and shoring it up and going all the rest of the way down to my sacrum. I will always have pain and always be quite limited, but I'm no longer heading toward a wheelchair. I count my blessings!

I hope you get the help you need.

Blessings,
Emily

Hi Emily!
There are therapeutic pools in the county rec programs here in Kansas City. I used to use one in Texas too. I had to adjust my old screen name here for personal reasons but this is Michelle and I want to help in anyway I can with my new Kansas frienRAB. I want to be careful too and not offend the moRAB by putting stuff on here that breaks the rules-you guys are all too important to me!!!
Praying for all of you!
Blessings-
