I have been prescribed the Advair 500 Diskus inhaler for a chronic cough. When I use the inhaler (2x times daily) it doesn't seem as if I am getting any of the medication into my lungs. From other users's experience should I be aware of some feeling (smell, taste etc of the med) when I inhale? I have received proper instructions on its use so believe I am using it appropriately. The counter is moving downwarRAB so it would appear to be mechanically working.
there have been times that i havent really noticed any taste or smell but im sure it works. Also i think it does take some time for it to work as its not a fast acting inhaler. I was taking mine for months and the doctor decided to use the nebulizer as the advair wasnt doing too much and i was still feeling horrible. I go off the nebulizer this week and back to just the advair.
Thank you for replying to my enquiry. This is the first ime I lhave had any experience with these boarRAB so I was very gratified to lget a response so quickly. Your have given me an assurance that the device is helpfull But the question still remains in my mind whether or not the device is woriking properly as it should, Presumably I am having a dry particle spray put into my lungs. but I can neither see taste or be aware in any way that anylthning is entering my lungs. I have sent an email enquiry to the manufacturer to ask what I should expect. When I get a reply I will post this for your information.
My case is rather trivial coparec to yiours as yopu say ltihat you feel awful whereas in my case I am only mildly troubled by a tickle in my upper chest. Thaniks again for your reply Patrick
There is no reason to think it is not working. Pretty basic device. However do you feel like there is more capacity in your lungs when you breathe deeply? The Salmeterol (long lasting beta2 agonist) should start to work in about 20-30 minutes. The fluticisone (corticosteroid) component generally takes about 10 days to two weeks to work.
I've been on Advair for about 6 years. Advair 500/50 for the last several years. I can say that I typically do not 'feel' the medication when I inhale it. I would say not to worry that you aren't using it right. If you are really unsure, drop by your Dr's office and have them verify if you are using it correctly. My Allergy doc has me demonstrate the use of my inhalers (both the discus and the albuterol types). They want to make sure I am maintaining good habits for using them effectively. The one thing with the discus is to make sure you are holding it level and that you are getting a good breath in.
The Advair is a preventative medication. You don't feel it working as much as you would your rescue inhaler.
