New Tx ordered-Initial Hot-Sync???

Based on your recommendation, I ordered the Tx from Palm with the free 1gb card. Of course, it takes 3-8 days to arrive. Question is this. I determined I must have some corrupt files. When I hotsync the new Tx how do I get it to just sync my calendar, date book, Splash ID, Docs to Go and my Bibles without chancing any of the other files to load? I am sure it is not one of these listed as I was able to get my T3 to work long enough to ascertain the problem might be with Launcher X (but not absolutely certain). I can start with the above programs, and add the others one at a time, and then the ones from my back-up card. I was smart enough to save all the program files and passwords (oops they?re in my database program which I obviously will have to install also). Question is how (step-by-step) do I hotsync just certain programs and databases, not all of them. I certainly don?t want to lose/wipe out my appointments and phone book by accident. Hope this makes sense. And thanks again for this forum and all the wonderful advice and hours of entertainment it provides.

My recommendations are to rename your backup directory on the PC to backupold. Install the TX's Desktop software and then hot sync. After you've got all of your PIM data by this method......then start adding your other programs from the backupold directory - one at a time. You'll need to registration codes for them but this be certain to clean out the cobwebs of any "old" stuff that you don't want on the TX.

OK I?ll display my ignorance, I guess that PIM is all the built in applications? but will your instructions bring forward all my calendar and phone book info, or how do I update them. Also note, that I used add-ins for both applications in the T3 (like DateBook which uses the main calendar app info as a base, and address plus, etc). I suspect those data bases are separate from the ?backup file? since they are PIMs, and from your instructions above??? If not, please advise. Again, I don?t want to lose many years of accumulated data, and some very important appointments scheduled, like doctors etc. I can always add the add-ins later if desired. The basic ones may work. My passwords, for example, are listed in the backup file by their names so that is easy enough to import into the backup folder after I reinstall the data base program itself. Correct? Or Not??? All the other programs, I can manage or no great loss, but the addresses and calendar are virtually irreplaceable. Thanks again, Mooseman, for your invaluable assistance. I owe you more than a couple of beers, if we ever meet, and if you imbibe in them. You, more or less got me through the initial Palm novice state with my first Palm. I am sure you don?t recall, but I do. Thanks again.

When you hotsync with a new Palm, the first thing you do is set ALL the conduits to "PC overwrites handheld". Do you know how to do that with your hotsync software? I use Mac so I do not know the setup on the PC.

Another thing, the TX will have an updated version of Palm Desktop.

Datebook still saves appointments to the default PIM so there shouldn't be a problem transferring your appointments. If you check in your backup folder, you'll probably see a file 'da*.pdb' below the ddatbook application. These 'pdb' files contain your info and can be transferred to your TX.

Enjoy your TX. Hope you get it in 3 days not 8...

Alright let me be real clear:

Do not set the conduits to "PC overwrites handheld" - the installation of the Palm Desktop will set the conduits correctly for a PC. You do not want the "system" conduit to ever (repeat ever) be set to have the PC overwrite the handheld as suggested especially when updating a new device (note: the reason why is because the System and SavedPreferences files - which determines which device your using - would be brought over from the T3 and I guarantee that you'll have nothing but problems as a result). So here is the detailed steps to take.

Since your T3 has died - lets be doubly sure to backup your data from the PC and hope that your SD backup is current as well.

1. On the PC using Windows Explorer go to: C:\program files\palm (or Palm One)\username (it's a derivative of your actual user name or possibly just SR)\XXXXX

XXXXX = Datebook (look for the file with a .dat extension and copy it to a safe place - I'd suggest a folder on your desktop).

XXXX = Addressbook - same as above a .dat extension
XXXX = Tasks or Todo - same as above a .dat extension
XXXX = memos or memo pad - same as above a .dat extension

You may also see ABA extension files or similar extension - you can copy these as well as they are the "archived" data that you deleted from the T3 and marked the deletion as "save record on desktop". These 4 folders as noted are the PIM information (Personal Information Manager). You might want to also copy the notepad folder if you had any "drawings" on the T3. Don't rename any of these folders - just #2 below. So yes - these are separate from the backup folder.

2. Rename the backup folder to backupold - this will keep all of your old programs handy - just remember the path so you can find them later or also move this renamed folder to the desktop for ease of use later. Step 1 and 2 has properly "secured" that you won't lose any data.

3. Install the TX - Palm Desktop and follow it's instructions. After you have successfully hot sync'd - then open the native Palm applications and confirm that your data is there as it should be. Be certain during the installation to use or pick the same user name as you did/had for the T3 otherwise your old software won't work after you put in it's corresponding registration.

4. Assuming success in #3 - then we can start adding programs from your backup via one of two methods: but first lets make certain to clean up that backupold folder thats on your desktop. Go to the following: C:\program files\palm\username\backup (This will have been created by the installation program) - and print or write down all of the files that are in this backup directory. Then go to the backupold folder on your desktop and any file that is identical in name - delete it from the backupold folder. This will make certain that you don't accidentally get something of "core" value from the T3 onto the TX. These will be files named such as mm****, phoneregistrydb and all sorts of stuff - these are not recommended that you add them from this "old" directory because they are T3 files and not TX files.

Two Restore Methods -
Method 1 (preferred by me) - in the backupold directory on the desktop - locate files with a "prc" extension. These are program files. Files with a "pdb" extension are usually the database file for a "prc". Typically they are named similarly such as Datebk5.prc is the program file for Datebook - and so on. Now for Datebk5 - I'd actually recommend that you download a clean version of it since its been updated to handle the TX. You will not lose any Datebk5 information as it is encoded in "tags" in the note fields for each entry. You will want to be certain to add in your Icon file for Datebk5 - which I'm not certain of the name but it should have Icon in the file name (default is "Icon-DATEBOOK but you could have created or used a different one). So to get the files into the Installation cue - simply double click on them with your mouse and it will launch the Palm Quick Installation.

Method2 (less preferred but still viable) restore the programs one by one from your SD backup.

Ok - very important - either method is ok but do not restore more than one or two programs at a time without a hot sync in between the installation. Why some will ask, because the SavedPreferences need to be reset (via Hot Sync) so as to not overload the software.....remember you are not dealing with a 512RAM device with a hard drive that also has a cache memory capability. And since the TX is a Non-Volatile File System (NVFS) and the T3 was a VFS file system - well the TX will prefer "baby steps" rather then leaps when it's loaded to RAM. Plus is there is some errant program causing issues - you will discover it easier. As a side note - when I get a new device - it usually takes me 2 or 3 days of adding back software in these steps and trying it to be certain it's 100% before adding the next. But I also add devices while still having the old one in working condition so I run two devices for a short period of time - but I'm AR about that.

As you stated you have your passwords in a separate database program? Since the device is new the dates will be reset for all of the programs so they should all work temporarily and if you used the same username as noted above in #3 then you can simply register all of the again.

I would highly recommend that you download new versions of all of your add on programs and install them - then retrieve any "old" database (pdb files) from the backupold directory. Most software has been updated for the TX and if you didn't keep up then adding the prc from the backupold directory might cause issues.

Ok, drbaer - if this needs further clarification just let me know - as always I'll help you out, buddy.

PS: You won't loose any data but you will have to reset your preferences for each program - including Datebk5 - that is the colors etc. You may want to check out Datebk6 which is still in beta but is very stable and is better for the TX then 5.

PSS - BTW - my job is going to require a move.....to the greater DFW area specifically Southlake. I won't be there until late August but you may have to pay up on all those beers. ;)
