new to bb pearl & pinstack

ok, fellas. first off, i'm completely new to bb. my brother just dropped a box into my hands one day & said i could keep it. it was a bb pearl (rogers). he knows i'm a tech freak & i love my gadgets so i guess he wanted to give me something to do (since i was on house arrest). i have a nokia n80 and that kept me busy for a while but now i already know all i could know about it.

i'm sitting here, trying to read up on the bb plans that fido has... i've been comparing from rogers & fido (those are the only 2 networks i'd choose) and i can't seem to make a decision. my fido plan was grandfathered from when i was 17 (21, now) and it's the 'city fido' plan. i don't want to lose this plan, it's kinda costing me $80/mo but i love the fact that i could talk to anyone for as long as i want to. i don't ever use the house line because my family uses it.

so far, i'm extremely lost on how the bb's work. my brother told me it uses a secure private network for my pin messages which is really cool but i don't have any access to that. i tried pinning a couple of my buddies but it never goes through. i can't recieve any pins, either. i think i don't have a data plan or something. i really don't know where i'm supposed to be. it's almost 7, i've been awake all night and on rabroad for the past 2 hours.

i guess what i need to know is...
if i go for fido, am i still able to send pin msgs? - if so, are they secure & private?
how does this whole pin msg thing work? - do i need to be on rogers for that?
how far would 7mb go? - i'll probably use it mostly on pin msgs (if that costs data) & a little bit of browsing (gmaps, movie times, etc.)

****... i'm real sorry if i'm asking too much but i'm completely lost! i've been on rabroad for the past 3 days and all i could understand was how to customize my pearl & add apps, games & music.

once again... i'm lost. lost. lost... never been so lost while trying to use a phone; it's supposed to be second-nature to me.

First off, hello and welcome to the stacks! Congratz on your first BB. I know once you get it figured out you'll be adicted like the rest of us. Lol.
As far as the fido vs Rodgers plan goes, I'm sorry but I can't be much help there. I'm on tmobile and I love it! However, the pin messaging I can help you with. Your pin number is a unique number assigned specifically to that device, not your account. So if you get a new BB you will get a new pin #. Also, pin messaging only works between BB's. You didn't exactly say who you were sending them to buy if you're trying to send it to a non BB such as by a telephone #, it won't work. Also, as far as I know, pin messaging does use data and therefor you do need a data plan to use it. As far as how much data you need is going to depend a lot on what you use it for and and how often. I personally have an unlimited plan but you can always try a plan you think you'll be likely to ie and then watch your bill and it should tell you how much you use each month and the adjust your plan from there.
I hope I was able to help you out. Also, for more info on pin messaging, just do a search, there are many great post/how to/FAQ's on here but members and the admin.
Good luck! And feel free to ask as many questions you want. That's what were here for!

whoa! a reply! i've been losing sleep over this lol... thanks a bunch! you just opened a huge window for me. now i understand it a bit more, i can take some more steps.

i was trying to pin my buddy's bb's... but it wasn't going through and i suppose it's because i didn't have a data plan. now that i know it's required, i'm going to call in fido in the next couple of days.

e* i gave you a trust point =]
