New T5

Howdy All!

Well, I finally took the plunge after my old m130 started giving up the ghost on me (on/off button didn't work, SD card kaput, etc). I ordered a new T5 from Palm and it arrived yesterday. So far it's pretty nice, but I have had a few problems already, primarily the program Titan Class World (http://www.classactionpl.com/TimePlace/index.htm) which came with it won't work without a fatal error. I was wondering if the other time app, WorldClock, caused a conflict.

My initial thoughts are I do miss the ability to check the time by pushing the 'up' buttom on the old 'M' series Palms. It also took me awhile to find the alarm clock (there is no clock app, just WorldClock). I also don't like how old apps appear on the T5, so I have deleted several that I didn't really use anyway.

But the screen is bright and clear, and I do like how I can expand it. And MobiFish runs and looks great on the T5! I have the WiFi card but haven't played around with it yet. Also, can anyone tell me what file extension is needed to play videos on the Palm Media player? I thought it would run .AVI files, but so far all I have gotten are error messages...

Cheers! M2

Hi,

Congrats on your new palm. With regards to your time issue, I guess I'd better wait for Carol to help you out, she owns the T5 after all. The best video player out there now is the TCPMP. Its freeware but much better than most shareware. Here: http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/download Though the webby claims the software to be in the unstable stage, but I've had no crashes or problems whatsoever with it yet, after about 1mth+ of use. Enjoy!

According to the web site you provided:
http://www.classactionpl.com/Support/Answers/support52.htm
"Question:
Does Titan Class support OS 5 e.g. the Tungsten T or Sony Clie NX70 devices
Answer:
Yes. Titan Class was one of the first commercially available suites of products to run on OS 5. You'll notice support for things like high resolution icons and the Tungsten's 5-way navigation button.
World 4 is also something specifically targetted at the ARM processor that powers the OS 5 based Tungsten and Sony devices. When installed you will notice the high resolution support and the smooth manipulation of the globe given the power of the ARM processor. World 4 has been optimised specifically for the ARM platform and must be seen to be believed!"

Incidentally World 4 was used by PalmSource Inc and Palm Inc in the launch of OS 5 and the Palm Tungsten T devices respectively."

From this information it doesn't appear that there should be a conflict with the World clock. My first thought was 'Does Titan Class require a hack?' After reading this information the web site, it doesn't look like it does. So, what I would do is email the developers and make them back up the product they have developed and state that it will work on the T5.

I absolutely enjoy my T5. If I didn't like it so much, I would be right online purchasing the newest Palm, Life Drive. However, I do have a word or two of caution about the T5.
1) One of the major things it doesn't like is installing several applications at a time when one of them is large.
2) I swear a T5 has a brain. In this I mean, it seems there are less and less softsets as it gets to know you and your habits. Yup, there are softsets. That is exactly why I suggest you synch just prior to any application installation.
3) If you can install files through the direct file transfer mode, you will have unmatched success in the installation. It is to bad you cannot install directly to the RAM through the direct file transfer mode. However, I have learned that you can even install the shell of an application the regular way and if there is an associated larger database, you can install that database through the file transfer into the internal card or inserted card and then associate the files after you have completed the synch.

Please feel free to come back here if you have additional questions, I learn also as I answer questions.

Please let me know what you hear back from the developers of your application you are questioning....I eager to hear what they have to say.

Well, I've had a chance to "play" with my new T5 a bit over the past week, so here are some of my "thoughts" on it...

* I like the ability to switch through applications by tapping and holding the 'home' icon...learned that one by accident (I never read the manuals, more fun to learn it as you use it).

* I like the ability of the Real Player to keep going after the T5 goes into "sleep" mode. Furthermore, I like listening to MP3s using the speaker. Most of what I have loaded are 60's songs, and it makes them sound like they are on an old AM radio. Kinda makes the music sound like it did back then. But, but using headphones (well, earplug speakers, really), the sound is great. I like having the two options.

* I have learned that MP3s cannot be in subdirectories on the SD card. Another lesson learned by accident.

* The power meter seems to flucuate like a gas gauge in an American car...it reads "full" (100%) for a long time then starts dropping like a rock. This is not a hard/fast observation, just something I've noted.

* MobiFish looks great on the T5...my kids love it.

* Medieval Heroes II is cool as well. I had the older version on my m130, went looking to see if there was one for the full-length T5 (there isn't that I could find). The MH II demo is also harder than MH I (which I could beat...haven't had that opportunity on MH II). Maybe I should just go back to MH I!

Anyhow, that's all I can think of off the top of my head. As we have had the movers here all week, I haven't been able to sit down and really play with my new T5. This is just stuff I've learned from toying around with it in my "spare" time...

Cheers! M2
