New T3 best practices

The Panda Man

I just received my new T3. :D

Does anyone have a set of best practices to follow from the start, such as initial battery charging period, upgrades, etc? Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Download the Palm T3 update, just in case it isn't already preinstalled. Most of them are now, but you can't be sure.
  • I've heard that it's good to let it charge overnight before first use. Not sure if it really matters that much.
  • Get a screen protector. This ain't a $100 PDA; you want to make sure your screen stays nice.
  • Get every Teal application they make. Whoops, never mind, that's not my line.
  • Be careful. Think of how your T3 might fall as you carry and use it, guarding against any possibility of damage.
  • Sync every time it's convenient, and sometimes when it's not. Your Palm will hard reset once in a great while for no apparent reason, and you don't want to lose data.
  • My Palm had a continuous screeching sound. Listen at a normal held length in a normal quiet room. If you can hear it, it's too loud. Return it.
  • Try to get your hands on an SD card, even if you don't want one, and test the SD port. Others have reported functional problems, and mine had the physical slot cover become dislodged (it was repairable once I fiddled with it). Return it if it doesn't work.

Enjoy!

And, make sure to buy/install/use a program that backs up your data to SD card regularly. I use/favor BackupMan and have it set to do the job in the middle of the night.
Good luck!

If you're impatient and only charge it up an hour, it can be remedied - let it go flat and THEN charge it all night.

You'll be rewarded in the long run with longer battery life times between charges.

Also, PSzalapski's #4 point above . . . . brilliant.

Let me guess, PSzalapski stole your line, PalmTealOver. :) Thanks for everyone's great suggestions. I am impatiently letting my T3 charge as I type. Maybe I will spend the time downloading software.

One of the first apps I will get is backup software. I am coming to the T3 from the Handera. It had preinstalled software capable of backuping up to either CF or SD.

Any thoughts or things to watch out for as I do the upgrade from my older version of Desktop to the new version compatible with the T3? I am unsure how to remove some of my older conduits for programs that will likely not work with the T3.

Thanks again.

From my experience, I would recommend you export your PIM information into backup files. Make sure these files are not stored in your palm desktop directory (usually c:\program files\palm). Rename your current palm desktop directory to something else. Run the add/remove programs wizard to uninstall your current version of Palm Desktop.

Now your ready to install the software that came with your T3. Once that is done, import your PIM data files and reinstall your applications.

If you do not uninstall your old version of Palm Desktop first, The OS may become corrupted on the T3, in which case you would have to perform a hard reset. I would actually recommend doing a hard reset before attempting to install anything on it. This will ensure the device does not have any bad settings or bad files.

Good luck on your installation.:)

I would recommend installing "Uninstall Manager" as your very first Palm program. This way the program monitors any subsequent installs and you can easily remove programs and their offending payloads if required.

Uninstall Manager can be found at http://www.northglide.com

The other thingis to install the latest version of teal script. With it you can use graffiti 1 and avoid the multisroke characters of g2. Also the punctuation shift with g 2 is an upright line, put in punctuation and then upriight line. This takes a long time. The tap punctuate and then tap of grafitti 1 is much faster.
