Why does every report say he's taking over from Chris Reeves, when if you count the actual superman franchise, he's taking over from Dean Cain, who in my opinion done a great job in the red cape and is still a massively over looked actor.

He is taking over from Chris Reeves. The new film is a continuation of the film franchise (from Superman 2 - they are ignoring 3 & 4 ever existed). Nothing from Lois & Clark or Smallville will be refered to.
