New revolutionary FREE media player is out!!

Hi all.
Glad to announce a new video/audio player -
The Core pocket Media Player (tcpmp) for Palm os.
It has been only released, but it is already fastest video player for palm.
About 1.5-2 times faster than MMplayer, SmartMovie, or any other player for palm OS.

Even owners of slower devices as TE/Zire71/TT/TT2 can enjoy full screen full framerate video playback. No more tweaks are needed on TT3/TT5 - it is so fast, that it easily plays any video , without overclocking or pre-rotation.

This player is based on the engine of BetaPlayer for pocketPc, and is written ty the developer of BetaPlayer - one of best players for PPc's. therefore it is very optimized, and supports large variety of formats.
For example, this is the only player for palm OS, that can play .OGM (ogg media
video) and .MKV (motroska) video formats. No need to mention that it plays regualar .AVI(divx/Xvid), and also .mp3 and .ogg (and other ) audio files. And it is completely free.

Although it is pre-alpha reliese, it's olready behaves very stable, and does excellent job. I personally tested it on TT3 and TE, and found no problems.

The current release is PRE-ALPHA, the developer mentions it is unstable on certain devices and asks you to back up before installing.

Backup all your data before testing this software
tcpmp.palmos.UNSTABLE.0.60.zip

Some reports already come in:
It crashes upon start with Zodiac 1, Zodiac 2, Treo 650
Seems to work with Tungsten T|3 and Tungsten T|E

Just putting out the whole story. Hopefully the software will be updated as often as the PPC version is (average once a week.) I look forward to trying a more stable version on my Zodiac2, but will wait until it's more ready.

works fantastically well on my TT. It is playing a test movie from the developer

320x176 DivX, 24fps@256kps
64kps mp3 stereo audio @22010Hz

truly astonishing imho

Hey guys, Next version 0.61 is out.
Some bugfixes.
I can confirm that green background is fixed!

And probably T5 landscape should work now.
Zodiacs should not crush upon start too.
Check it out.

Good to hear about the update. I think I'll still wait a while before installing it on my Z2. It's just something about all the hard resets and re-installing from backups and blah blah blah that gets old.

I bet in a couple of weeks, this software will be up there with the already established media players on the Palm OS.

I can hardly wait for the next release. This program makes me glad I didn't upgrade Pocket Tunes. I purchased one of the first releases of that program, but didn't upgrade when they started charging for the upgrades.

Opens up fine T3, no crashes.

WILL NOT FIND the movie clips I have whether they're on the card or put in RAM.

Went to menu and looked at "media" and blank screen couldn't be prompted to "find" media anywhere; is there a way to tell it what folder on the card (or where in RAM) to find the movie files?

It does not seem to "scan" files to find anything at startup and I can't figure out how to tell it where they are. I'm MOST DEFINITELY interested in it and would almost certainly adopt it TODAY, if I can figure these questions out. Anyone?

I tried putting files in DCIM, PALM, Main Folder AND launcher - no "findie." I'm not sure what's meant by "ROOT DIRECTORY" if not DCIM or PALM.

THANKS, JungleMike.

Wow AWESOME. The guy who writes beta player is amazing, as is BetaPlayer (easily the best video software for PPC). He is very quick to release updates and sort bugs, and I have no doubt that as JungleMike said, it will be the best media player for Palms, even if it isn't already.

Off to try it out....:D

OK - I'm a moron.

Someone please tell me what "Root directory" on a Palm Card actually is - I tried Launcher, Palm, Palm/Programs and DCIM - and ALSO on the "very front" of the card UNDER Palm and DCIM - you can't much more "root" than that?!

I think I'm missing codecs or libraries like Kinoma require; or is the 765k player "all inclusive?" If it is it's also a great size as well - and will probably run in flash.

This is EXTREMELY exicting; I don't know who this author is but it's done us all a great service. Finally a video player??!! Terrific!

"Root" would be the same level as /Palm, /DCIM, etc. And I think the player IS supposed to be all-inclusive. What sort of clips do you have? (I'm going to put a couple of .avi files on my card when I get home and give it a go.)

OK Telyx - got it - now makes sense that "root" would be above all "other levels;" (DUH!); it will LIST a movie but so far won't play them - I've got to figure out whether mp4 will actually play or if they should be in some other format with TMPG Encoder (STILL freeware if anyone needs it!).

Messing around with it now . . . .

YES!!! Woohoo . . . . .

All I've got to figure out is sizing of the "full" screen - not as "full" as I'd like but quality is SUPER. So far it's MPEG & MPEG4; havent tried other formats yet but if it handles AVI I think this is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

"Full" may be affected by "zoom" settings apparently they are NOT "defaulted" and left - like "no audio" setting . . . play again and audio is there. Permanent defeat would be nice - but hell , it's an ALPHA and an awfully good one!!

This thing seems BY FAR the easiest I've ever seen compared with FireViewer, Kinoma and CERTAINLY mmPlayer (sorry, but always thought MM was a HUGE and worthless pain!).

This is a truly FANTASTIC find - and I can't tell ANYTHING is "alpha;" did get the menu flash/chopped text once but I've had FAR WORSE with MMPlayer. In my opinion is reasonably SOLID now and will only get better. Finally . . . new REAL software . . . just great!!

I'm going with this thing. Great - just tap screen for fullscreen. Menu must be hit while movie is STOPPED to avoid glitches.

Movie clips you've configured for other players can be "re-formatted" if you like to give whatever "file size compression" you want or need; foward/reverse arrows work great and QUICKLY; no hesitation, no silly "searching media" nonsense.

Other great stuff about this one: Does NOT make 12 Saved prefs entries and 34 unsaved - there is only ONE entry in prefs (Unsaved) and that's "TPLY" for TCPMP Player. No saved prefs at all - let alone a zillion! Much less clutter if you're picky like me!

Improvements that would be nice:

1. Ability to choose a folder other than root

2. Better file information screen and ability to delete clips from the player.

These are VERY minor - and whether or not they're addressed, this is the one to go with, IMHO.

Most excellent, brother dudes.

Addendum: Important:
Some of you asked on here about video converters and there was a freeware one called TMPG Encoder I use it and it's fantastic. Someone said it was no longer freeware. It is indeed still freeware, latest version 2.54 (weird numbering - 2.58 is actually not as new!)

The address is:
http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html
-----------------------------

Overall, I love this player! There are a couple of minor features I would like to see added:

1. Screen blanking when playing audio files.

2. Volume control.

3. I agree with Paul that there should be an option to store the media files in a different place besides root.

Oh, and almost forgot . . . crashes in flash.

RATS! Oh well - I'm not one for 765k proggies in RAM - but what the heck. I like it that much! It may be crashing repeatedly when moved to flash since it's an alpha - the final may be okay - if not at least Kinoma's gone, along with its libraries and 12 saved/unsaved prefs mess . . . come to think of it, Kinoma crashed more than once and MMplayer would hardly go at all - never got it to really work -- so for an alpha this thing has really "got it goin' on."

Accessing movies is faster (although dwinget's right about having a "blank screen" to begin with) and there is no "scanning" of all your media files. Remembering settings would be cool but you can't expect everything this early in development, and frankly too many buttons and bells and whistles would take away from the thing anyway. I like the look of it.

It's lean, mean, basic, not too big and works - that's more than I can say for several other "players" over the last year or so.

Phenomenal. I mean, as much as I endorsed MMPlayer, it did seem strange that it struggled so much to play videos with the 400Mhz processor, compared to Pocket PC's of 400Mhz. The program seems very reponsive, and I'm getting 0 dropped frames and 200% benchmark (incidentally still less that the ~250% benchmarking on Pocket PC for the same video)..
One thing I always found when Gabor (who made this) released his Pocket PC player, was the almost non-existant crashing, even in Alpha (and pre-alpha). The same seems to be evident again here. I have no doubt there will be regular updates and new features implemented constanty; as there was with his Pocket PC player.
Unbelivably, it's all being done for free. Ditch Kinoma forever. As far as MMPlayer goes, it's been superseded already. BUT there is one card MMPlayer is still holding- and that is WMV (and WMA) licensing. It's is highly unlikely for the free TCPMP to ever support either of these format, as it would cost money per copy. MMPlayer has however secured WMV licensing, so it's not out of the picture yet, so to speak.
(The only reason the Pocket PC player supported WMA/WMV is because it used the codec already on the Pocket PC's.)

In case anyone is confused, the Pocket PC equivalent player is called Beta Player. But I believe it will very soon also be called TCPMP (the core pocket media player). Both are written by one guy Gabor Kovacs.

Can anyone figure out how to rotate?
