There's specific rules behind the way they time the results. I remember reading about Nokia's competition in Singapur some years ago. You can't use T9 and the messages are usually words that T9 wouldn't pick up anyway with numbers and symbols all over the place. 42 seconds is pretty quick with tap.

T9 has every word in the competition message, including Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus, and there are few symbols and no numbers.

I saw a Jay Leno segment where two teens went up against two older gentlemen who were using morse code. The morse guys won. The phrase was, "I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to GEICO." I'm guessing the teens were using triple tap instead of T9.
