New puppy that whines when people are away?

I had just got my new puppy yesterday.

i put it in the puppy bed, at night time, and it wouldn't stop whining! it woke my whole family up because the whining was too loud! i slept for only 5 hours yesterday because the puppy would stop whining if i sat next to it!

any tips? is it normal? and what should I do?
