New PIMs Update

Thanks for the link, Richard. The PIM updates are the ones released August 31 so you don't need to get these again if you've already installed them. If you haven't installed them, do so, since the update fixes some of the bugs in the Data Manager, which has caused so much grief for users of DateBk5 and Agendus. It doesn't fix all the problems but at least it's something. :(

Found this through a posting from Mooseman few days ago;

I have downloaded and saved it, but so far haven't loaded it as I don't have "calendar problems" on my T3.

JIM: would you recommend INSTALL ANYWAY to AVOID problems or only intall if you're having problems?

As usual there is NO explanation on the PalmOne site - just "here it is."

As soon as I hear from Jim Cooke or others in the afirmative, I'll go ahead and "bang it on there" if you think that's advisable.

Thanks!

I installed it on my T3, and have noticed a considerably quicker HotSync time, as well as DateBk5 working much better. I thought you were an Agendus user. . . If so, I'd recommend the update. If not, I'd still recommend the update anyway. I haven't seen any downside to it using either DateBk5 or the built in Calendar app.

I noticed on unpacking the zip that the "write date" of the app was 6/25/04 - I had been wondering

1. why it took 9 weeks to release it
2. If anyone had installed it and found things "better"
3. If anyone had had "problems" AFTER the install.

Since you've answered 2 & 3, I'll go ahead and intall it. Thanks!

Addendum: Installed. Well, it LEAVES the original 36k PIMS file in ROM, and puts this "new" patch in RAM. This file can't be moved to flash to replace the old one OR deleted.

Bear in mind then, that you'll once again (like Docs2Go) have 2 copies of this app/patch - ROM and RAM, but not be able to "keep" the newer one and get rid of the old. Any subsequent Hard Reset/failure will require RESTORING this file from HotSync or Card Backup or it will "go away."

You will also have to reset your system sounds after self-forced soft reset if you want "system sound off." I haven't noticed any other differences (yet).

Paul,

Yes, the patch does reside in RAM and you'll need a copy if you hard reset.

In addition to making improvements on some of the bugs in the Data Manager patch, this update also fixes an occasional problem of deleted calendar records staying in the database and causing corrupt sync tasks. It also fixes the problem of marking a task complete on the Palm but not having the completion transfer to Outlook. The improvements are small but significant if you run into either of these problems. I've also seen reports of the calendar loading and running a little faster but I have no if that's real or perception. As you say, the release notes don't give one a clue as to what the update does, maybe because PalmOne/PalmSource doesn't want to admit to the bugs it fixes.

I had hoped to "reply" with PMs to save "posting space," but here's what:

I deleted it. This is possible through TealMover (JackFlash would not move it to flash or delete it because it was "in use.") Once again, I didn't even have CHANCE to do soft reset, because it crashed on its own as I was selecting "mReset." The PIM Update file is marked "soft reset on install" for everyone's edification. You'll have to reset your system sound to "off" if that is how you had it before.

Then to make sure, I did hard reset and restored from the Card (did a "pre install backup" to be sure I was getting the "before picture." If you do this, be sure and delete the PIM update from your Hotsync folder or it will likely end up on the T3 again.

Since I don't sync with Outlook and have had no problems, it just seemed "messy" to me to leave a second file of same name in RAM (much like App Slip Rotate/Status Bar .prc's for the T3 Landscape can't be put in ROM 'cause the old ones are there . . . . GROAN. . . so you have two copies of THAT, too. Thanks to a rushed release and no apparent beta testing, the T3 and its "patches" is starting to look like a bullet-ridden barrel with bandaids.

I'll install this thing again later if need be, but again I haven't had problems and use the Palm Desktop - to-dos are deleting and I don't use Outlook. Thanks to all for the information - far more than PalmOne provided, by the way!

Cheers.

Paul,

For whatever reason, the T3 seems to be more problematical than any other OS 5.2.8 Palm machine in terms of this PIM update. I suspect the reason has something to do with the T3 being the first one with the new PIM's and the bugginess of the Data Manager patch used by PalmOne to keep the new and old PIM apps in sync. I don't think that PalmOne has ever released a comprehensive update for the T3 and the new PIM update doens't address all the Data Manager issues that remain. By comparison, the Zire 72, even though it uses the same OS version as the T3, does not have the same buggy Data Manager.

I'd probably think twice about installing the PIM upgrade on a T3 if I weasn't having any obvious problems.

I've got it on CD if I need it later - but I'm glad I did the hard reset and dumped it.

It's just curious how some people have "faster synch" and I noticed nothing - just weird.

Maybe we can address this later down the road - for now I'm doing fine without it and don't have 2 copies of something else in RAM and ROM and "wondering what it does."

Thanks to all for the updates and great information - we should be running P1's Support department!!

I thought this was PalmOne's support. . . Oh wait, that's the bunch of folks who give canned answers of "Hard Reset" or "You have third party applications installed. We can't do anything with them" This is an actual SUPPORT department. As in helps to get things working again
