palmOne's Next Handheld WILL Be Called the LifeDrive

Interesting article....

http://www.rabroad.com/article/LifeDrive_Not_TungstenX?site=Palm

importantly this...

"Supposedly, the LifeDrive will have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 1.1 wireless networking. Of course it will come with a web browser and email application. "

and

"The most significant feature of the LifeDrive, and the one from which it draws its name, will be its built-in Hitachi 4 GB miniature hard drive. "

Sounds impressive....

Thanks for the info. Sounds good....the 20GB mini-drive in the initial rumours would have been preferable to the 4GB one, but hey, 4GB more than before eh?

I would be tempted to consider Palm again...but it would be still tough to give up the Windows mobile apps I've gotten used to.

Will be interested to see what develops...

I too find the news interesting; but I am a little tired of spending around $500 every second year to be technically up to date.
There are however two obvious setbacks with this device, which I have not seen discussed elsewhere:
1. Until now one of the advantages of a PDA has been its silence. You can use it anywhere without disturbing anybody; but with a harddisk involved, however small, there will be some noise, every time You use it! This will make it useless in theaters, cinemas, churches and the like.
2. With such a large harddisk synchronizing will take a VERY long time. Even with my T3 and Intellisync it is often a 5 minutes project, so unless a new modified hotsync is constructed, allowing You only to sync datebook, contacts, and to-do's normally, You may have to spend up to one quarter of an hour just waiting for the sync backing up Your device. Also a card backup will be impossible unless a new and modified backupprogram is made, as the card will be smaller than the internal memory.
I personally find the noise problem most important; but both should be taken into concern by prospective buyers.

Hi,

Jacques, I've to agree with you on the price issue, spending $500 is not a small matter, not including the various kits and programs also. But I don't agree on the hard disk worry. I own a 40gb Ipod and its hard disk is not making much noise anywhere i use it. The spinning of the disk is only noticeable when you hold it and feel the slight vibration. Furthermore the drive used is going to be a microdrive and its much newer than the 4gb drives used in ipods. So i guess the level of noise will be insignificant. I hope. ;)

I would urge everyone, hard as it may be, to wait a little bit - especially since we're the "seasoned bunch."
I would bet that before any end of year Linux stuff, "LifeDrive II" will be out with twice the program storage - it's historically what happens (505/515, T1/T2/T3).

They'll have to milk LifeDrive with an "upped version" before rolling out Cobalt; I'd see what the "II" version has and then decide.

Let everyone wait - don't worry I'll give you my review shortly after it's out because I'll have one (provided the hype lives up to reality).

The advantage of being able to take certain files with me and send them to a customer using the wifi will be very advantages for my needs. Most of my customers now have wifi access that I can connect to and they'll be able to immediately review what I'm presenting in hard copy with an electronic.

4GB will handle my needs rather than having to change a bunch of SD cards.

So, I'll work the bugs out - anybody want to buy a good T5? after this thing hits the streets.

I agree with PlamTealLover.
Not to shoot down Palm, but once all other pda's come out with hard drives having a palm maybe a thing of the past. Pocket PC users will have an advantage that Palm used to have, a plethora of programs.
I love my T3, but I need to think hard not to get stuck with a white elephant if I go with the Lifedrive.
Point is what ever make is easier to download/ play/work is it.
And I hate to say it windows is a whole package, especially with more memory which has always been a problem on the pocket pc's.
Unless they can pull a Mac !!! (ipod) out of their nether regions.

lol

Careful - watch the "4GB" part - storage for what? MP3s?

Or the files that will help YOU (specifically) out? If it's generic storage space on a hard drive/USB "visible," then GREAT. Can they be accessed & transferred via WiFi? If so, great. But P1 also has a history of saying one thing and then the reality is it's

"xxMB only if you're wearing white tennis shoes and driving a Buick at night making left turns in reverse."

One thing about being a former beta tester for Palm is you have knowledgeable contacts.........and it makes it easier to return as well.

Also, to be an Early Adopter, I usually end up getting one from P1 and they have always had a 30 day return guarantee unlike other's that I'm aware of, course CompUSA has recently changed their policy.

If the 4GB hard drive is similar to the internal SD drive on the T5 then transferring will also be accomodated via USB and the File Mode - so also no issue if they won't go by wifi.

The wifi will be as much for email sitting in my house as it will be for transfer purpose but you are wise old friend and I will advise as soon as I confirm or deny the functionality.
