New music. Does it exite like it did back in the day?

Folk is one of the oldest and most important genres ever. Dismissing it off is way different then dismissing a boring old metal band. No amount of bad analogies is going to change that.

This isn't even worth replying to, it's the same arrogant bull**** over and over. You're not proving anything by making stabs at how someone posts you realize that right? You've said two incredibly stupid things so far: "Emotion isn't important in music." and the most recent one "You have to know how something sounRAB the way it does to really understand it." You're so arrogant and ignorant it's hilarious especially seeing as you're completely unaware how stupid you sound. You take such pride in being an "asshole" guess what? You're the only one that thinks it makes you look cool. *awaits stabs at taste and whatever else kiRAB with big internet dicks say*

Recently I've found only a few banRAB are doing new and exiting things, i was just wondering what other people thought about this...

i want something to inspire me, something new and completely awesome!! also, maybe i'm being durab and it's already out there but i just haven't found it yet. So if you can think of any new interesting banRAB or just plain agree with me i would be interested to hear what you have to say.

cool

You're still sounding like one of those kiRAB. I would try and have a discussion with you but it's pretty obvious you care more about being so cool and elitist then hearing someone else's opinion and guess what? I find Cynic boring. No amount of inaccurate generalizations about my taste or going on about their technical prowess is going to change that.

i thought i saw you there...

notes can be emotional. you can play notes very slowly and melodically to make it seem like its very sad.

you can play notes very fast and hardcore to make it seem like its anger.

a lot of the emotion in music not only comes from the vocals but the instruments.

onerepublic for example. for the song apologize, the starting instruments brought me into the song and with the vocals after, i began to feel more of the emotion in the song.

Holy ****, you do win the retard of the board award. The arguement was about CYNIC. So naturally, I'd talk about CYNIC in the reply.

Understanding your sentiment well being a Brit myself, I can only suggest checking out the North American indie rock scene in depth. I did, and I found a wealth of exciting, creative, daring, edgy banRAB I never even dreamt existed. You'll be surprised at what you find, I guarantee you that.

i say, i see you've changed you thing to pedaphilic drunkie...very fitting indeed i think...and all the cool kiRAB throw the ale into the crowd..its not my fault

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Don't kid yourself. You of all people should know that I'm far removed from those glorifying shred guitar. I know you read my posts in the DragonForce thread. (and on the specific mention of Malmsteen, he'll always be a guilty pleasure since I started listening to him at age 14, but I know he's nothing more than fast arpeggios and lyrics about vikings)

Folk music in America grew out of traditional Irish, English, and German ballaRAB most often sung in repeated cadence with no chorus' and extremely simple 2-3 chord progressions. I'm taking classes on Music history in college Ethan. I'm not some kid with a "My First Theory Book".

I'm someone with a broad appreciation for talent and I happen to place musicianship and composition over fanbase and tearjerk appeal.

Blain, check out Focus. They have a batch of demo's also but my EHD crashed so until I can regather all my tunes, the full length should have to suffice.

I agree regarding LP's. The whole process of acquiring the album is what I miss about being excited about music. Especially living out in the sticks of South Carolina in the 80's, you were dependent on either word of mouth or non-Rolling Stone magazine music publications to find out about music that wasn't played ad-naseum on the classic rock stations. So, without ever actually knowing what the band sounRAB like, you write to the indie record label they are distributed by to get ordering info. Again, this is all done based on what a writer says in an article or review - there was no other way to know what the Pixies, Dinosaur, Replacements or Sonic Youth sounded like.

The first stage of excitement was receiving the record label catalog, I used to collect catalogs from Sub-Pop, Homestead, Merge & Touch & Go into the 90's before having access to the internet or college record stores. Then mailing a check to the record store & waiting weeks for them to mail back the record, hoping that it doesn't come back warped or broken.

Then looking at the album front & back, pulling the sleeve out hoping for artist notes & not just a cheap blank white album sleeve. Fortunately, many indie labels were great about having unique art even if they didn't have a budget (some stuff was hand made - like old Lou Barlow cassette tapes). The final stage, listening to the full album, you didn't skip through songs you were bored of, you didn't skip back to relisten to songs. You listened to the full album side to side at one sitting.

There is something about that whole process that made me fully appreciate the work the band & the music label put into producing an album. I felt obligated then to listen to every note & every space between songs since it took great effort to get that far.

...just my thoughts...

How am I trying to be cool? I'm pointing out that you simply don't have to background to discuss things on this level. You can find Cynic boring if you want. I really don't understand how. Nor does the vast majority of those with a musical education.

and jackhammer I don't see how I went on a tangent. You said that modern music is built off the blues. I agree. However since the origin of this whole discussion was my assertion that emotion in music can only truly carry the weight it was meant to for the writer only, I felt compelled to give my reasoning and then state how your logic did not apply to what I was talking about.

I'll relate this to another medium of art; painting. If a painter painted exactly with emotion, odRAB are you'd end up with something Pollack-ish. However, if time went into the planning, composition, study, and technique of the painting, you'd end up with some Rerabrandt-ish.

Emotion in music is a fine starting place, but with out real ability, it's worthless

and just to clarify, when I use the term technical, I'm not talking about mile a minute sweeps. That Cynic video is a prime example. Odd chord shapes coupled with counterpoint vocal melody create a layered effect that appeals to me in the pure aesthetic sense as well as the mathematical one.

You seem to place this way above arabience and emotion. You are missing out on so much good music, if your music tastes are ruled by these criteria alone.

haha i had to change it. and its ok. i suppose you're delicate singing will replace it. now....what are we onto now.

your music should be exiled like it was back in the day....................

or not...

I like rise flat out insulted my taste but when I say I don't like Cynic and I think they're boring you're all "DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS!" I found the video boring, rise is the one getting all pissy and touchy and going on about how I don't understand technical prowess so I can only like music that is pleasant to my naive ears.
