Without trying to sound like an old miserable git, I can say with great confidence that many of the sub genres invented for Metal are pure elitism and if you really delve deep into the whole Metal scene, you can easily drop the sub genres by 75 % and still be able to articulate a banRAB particular sound. The same is rife in Dance music. They are both such insular genres fan wise which is why they are both paradoxically massively popular and maligned by those outside.
